Does anyone know of a credit card that does not charge extortionate rates for use abroad? e.g. Visa % on all ATM 3% on purchases plus 21.74 % from day of use.

What you're talking about is taking a cash advance off of your credit card. As you say, very expensive.

What you need is an ATM/Debit card that deducts the cash directly from your checking account. I can't imagine any back not offering these. Find out how much the bank charges for an out-of-area withdrawal, some charge a lot more than others. The bank in Europe will not charge you anything to get money from their machine.

Mincepie, there's no point in "re inventing the wheel". You can scroll down and find several current discussions on this very issue, including tips on specific charges by specific banks.

But are you talking about a credit card for an ATM (bad idea) or using an ATM card to withdraw money from your checking account? Big difference. Also that is all discussed at length below.

What was said all day long in several easily read threads that answer your question and more are still valid. I'm sorry you don't see the value of the other posts on this forum and think that each person must ask the same question already answered and still on the first page.

And you might note that the bulk of my last post was actually asking you to clarify your question so it could be properly answered. Like SusanP, I was unclear if you are talking about an ATM card or a Credit card. It seems you are talking about using a credit card to withdraw money instead of an ATM card. If you read any thread here about ATMs or Credit cards you will find EVERYONE says what you're talking about is a bad idea.

I will try to remember in the future to avoid helping you with your questions. Please forgive me if I offer helpful advice because I didn't happen to catch your name at the top of it. OK?

I did say Patrick that I appreciated the help you gave. How would anyone know what advice had been given on tripadvisor...if they never used that site? I just never understand why someone answers a post that they think is stupid...let it be unanswered or let others answer it.
