Urgent! Need hotel or apartment in Avignon for mid-May. Please help.
Hi Everyone,
This is the third time I try to post without any responses. Perhaps my titles are not eye-catching enough. I am planning a brief 9-day trip to Paris and Avignon for mid-May. I have already reserved an apartment in Paris from VIP. I need to reserve a hotel or apartment in Avignon for 3 nights. My adult daughter will be traveling with me. Our budget is about 100-120 euros per night. Included breakfast would be great. Please give me your recommendations. I have looked at threads here but they are old, and also Venere and France.com; but I would like input from people who have been there recently. Thank you for any help you can give me. Gladys

Hello Underhill,
Yes, I have looked under Venere.com because I've used them before. What I'm looking for is someone with recent personal experience. The last time I was in Avignon a few years ago, I did a lot of research but ended up staying in a dingy bed and breakfast; although the ladies running it were very nice. Someone has answered on another thread regarding Kyriad Hotel near Palace de Papes in Avignon. I'm looking into that one.
Thank you for your reply. Gladys

Hi Gladys,
This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but I'll throw it out there anyway. My wife and our friends, two mid-50's couples, spent a week at Chateau de la Vernede in May 2006. It is a B&B, about 5 minutes from Avignon. The prices are at the upper end of your range.
The property and house are on the beautiful grounds of a 14th century ex-monastery, with a swimming pool and lovely gardens. An attached wing was being completely gutted and renovated while we were there, but I don't see any new rooms listed on the website, so I don't know anything further about that.

We stayed in the Sinople Room.
The proprieters, Francoise and Christian, are two of the warmest, loveliest people we've ever met in our travels. Francoise basically runs the place, and Christian entertains the guests with a never-ending series of stories of his travels around the world. He would drink wine with us on the rear patio every evening when we returned from touring. In the 7 nights we spent, we had dinner wth them 3 times - twice in their home, and once at an Avignon restaurant.
Believe me when I tell you that I'm not on the payroll, but our stay at this place was one of our very best memories of all of our travels.
Good luck!

Hello Phillyboy,
What a beautiful place! We could probably stay in one of the less expensive rooms, but we won't be renting a car. We will be depending on trains and buses. We won't be able to go too far afield, but we will be able to see the towns we are interested in seeing in such a short time. Thank you so much for sharing. Gladys

Hi gladfon
A few years ago we stayed at the B&B La Banasterie in Avignon. We did not have a car and thought the place was very well located. They had a lovely breakfast and the hosts were very gracious and gave us tons of useful information (I do speak French). i think they speak some English. We stayed in a two room suite and it was perfect. I would definitely go back!

Hi Gladys,
We did have a car at Chateau de la Vernede. If you do consider staying there, I would e-mail Francoise using the Contact link on the site, to learn about bus availability to get you to Avignon. From there, of course, you will have many public transportation options. But the house itself is located on a country road, and though only 5 or so minutes drive from Avignon, it feels like you're way out in the country.
If you like to stay in a place with a country feel, but close to the city, you could hardly do better. But without a car, it may be more convenient for you to stay in the city at a place like La Banasterie, which looks very nice.
Whatever you decide, have a great time. This area of Provence in beautiful, and packed with tons of great things to see and do.

I'm still wondering what is "urgent" about Avignon in mid-May. Mid-July during the festival I would understand. In mid-May, I wouldn't even make reservations unless I was there on a Saturday night.

Hi Kerouac,
It may not be urgent if you have a car and more time.
We will have only 3 nights in Provence and want to stay at a place that is convenient for buses and train. Some of the places I have seen on France.com and Venere, for example, are around the outskirts of Avignon. Other places seem a little seedy. I want to make sure I get something suitable.
By the way, I always enjoy your pictures of Paris and your knowledgeable input. Thank you. Gladys

Hotel Mignon will be priced at the lower edge of your budget. It is not seedy, but is somewhat "worn" although it still felt like the owners cared. Very well located within the old city walls on a chic street near the Pope's Palace. I remember the breakfast being very good as well.
It probably won't be as nice as the ones listed above, but it might not cost as much either.
