Smalley,

something must be going on in the city during those days (although there evidently is no Sept. 31st ...), that I am not aware of, but which causes almost all hotels to be sold out.

You might need to resort to the suburbs. Ahrensburg has a good train connection into the city (25 min. max) and has the Parkhotel facing a pretty water palace. It is a three/ four star property and singles usually retail between € 89.- and € 129.-. There is a garage below the hotel which costs a fee, but on a neighboring property there is ample parking space for free.
You could drive to the station from there (5 min. drive) and park the car at a car park adjacent to the rails for free.
The homepage is

http://www.parkhotel-ahrensburg.de/main-e.htm
I don't know if they have a room available, though, as evidently you can only reserve a room by sending an e-mail through their website.

P.S. I am living in the city and if I can think of any alternative, I will get right back here.

Good luck and enjoy your stay, should you be able to get yourself a room.

Try this:

I saw a suburban ETAP that had availability for your dates. But I don't know how convenient it is.

Thanks for the suggestions.
The ETAP isn't available anymore and I am now enquiring at the Parkhotel. I have found a B&B in Hamburg-Stellingen, about 25 min by bus to center.
I also have an idea there's some kind of event on because lots of places are full.
Any other ideas still welcome!

You could try bidding on Priceline, but the parking and public transit situation would be uncertain. Take a look at the Priceline zone map if you decide to do this, because it's quite large for Hamburg. Most likely all the hotels Priceline would use are full, but no harm in trying if you're okay with the terms.

Had a look at Priceline but didn't want to chance location and parking. Have now booked a B&B for 60 euro a night and 25 mins bus ride out of town.
Thanks again for your ideas, most appreciated.

Smalley,

I still don't know what event is going on, but every hotel I researched during this day is sold out - even in suburbian regions of Hamburg. Others are really expensive, such as the Novotel Stellingen, which this morning offered a room at a ridiculous € 180,-. That was far to much for me to even mention it in a recommending manner, given its industrial location.

Basically, if you cannot get the Parkhotel (which might very well be the better choice, as you can get into town probably even faster from there than from Stellingen) , I believe that you lucked out getting that B&B.
Stellingen is nothing to write home about IMHO, but at least you've got a place to rest.

I don't know the purpose of your visit, but if you need any restaurant recommendations or other info, I shall be glad to help.

I have posted on Hamburg here on Fodors before, which is why you can also do a text search here.

Enjoy your trip

hsv,
I'm doing this at home in Amsterdam for my wife and (grown up) daughter, who are currently holidaying in Denmark but passing through Hamburg on the way back home. They've never been there before and will be looking for the usual touristy things, I guess. They're arriving Wed late afternoon but will have a full Thursday, leaving Friday morning. If you could give your top-3 'must do/see' suggestions I'll pass them on by SMS! They'll be very grateful and I'll put some photo's on our website to show you they've been there. Looking forward to hearing from you again.

Smalley,

I suppose your folks won't be up to much after their arrival in the late afternoon. It also gets dark at around 18.45, so I suugest they take a rest and probably enjoy a nice dinner later.

In Altona, which is not far from Stellingen, there is my favorite restaurant, currently. It's called Stocker after the owner and cook. And it is located on Max-Brauer-Allee, next door to the Theater for Children (Theater fuer Kinder), a short walk of probably 7 minutes from the Altona station. The cuisine is Austrian and to die for IMHO. And I would imagine that your wife and daughter may appreciate something like that after a holiday in Denmark, where it is certainly possible to indulge in great seafood, for which Hamburg is otherwise known for, too.
Stocker isn't exactly cheap, but has some very good values. If you order from their menu of Austrian classics, a soup plus main course will set you back around € 17.-, which I think is fair. The service is very pleasant and the decor, if a bit kitschy still provides for a lovely ambiance.

Alternatively, reasonably priced fresh seafood can be had at Fischerhaus close to Fischmarkt. There is no view of the river, however, and the ambiance is not really special. The only thing it has going for it is the fresh fried fish. Decent enough.

A bit more spohisticated is Restaurant Fischmarkt in Ditmar Koel Str. close to the port. No view here, either, but a nice ambiance and a show style kitchen.

If they would just love a pizza, I would suggest to order one at Bar cum Restaurant Elbe 76, which is located in Bismarckstr. in Eimsbuettel in a very nice residential neighborhood consisting of many Art Deco buildings (and in spite of its name has nothing to do with the River Elbe). It is about a 10 min. drive from Stellingen. The place is happening and the full choice of pizzas (for the Italians: Pizze, I know ;-) ) can only be ordered in the front section where the bar is. I am pretty sure your daughter would like the place (and the Rucola, Parma ham, Parmiggiano cheese Pizza is to die for).

The next morning, I would start the day with a breakfast at Literaturhaus Cafe on Schwanenwik str. right by the Alster Lake in the center of town (Eastern shore). From there, I would take a short walk along the shore of the Alster.
I would then proceed to Landungsbruecken, the docks of Hamburg (also a train station of the same name there). I would take a tour of the port with one of the small boats called Barkassen. Those will take your family through the old canals of the historic warehouse district called Speicherstadt which is currently being revived as a combination of business and residential district.
Having returned to Landungsbruecken, I would board the ferry in the direction of Finkenwerder (included in a daypass for the public transport system) and get off at the Neumuehlen/Oevelgoenne stop. To the left there is a pretty walkway (Strandweg) lined with old captain's houses. There are also some cafes for a refreshing cup of coffee.
Afterwards head back into town (either by ferry again or taxi) and make it to Hamburg's landmark, St. Michaelis church ("Michel&quot. Its interior is understated, its organ should you be lucky might be played, and the view from the squire (small admission fee) is gorgeous.
Nearby across the road (inquire), there is Krameramtsstuben, a tiny road where ancient buildings have been preserved that will give you in insight into what Hamburg used to look like before a big fire in the early 20th century burnt most parts of the city center.
I presume, they (being women) won't mind some (window) shopping afterwards which is best in the streets around the Inner Alster Lake in downtown. Neuer Wall and Große Bleichen are very popular and also sport some very nice shopping arcades. Worldclass shopping is to be done there. Train stop would be either Jungfernstieg, Rathausmarkt or Stadthausbruecke.
While there, they could also adore a glance at City Hall (Rathaus).

For dinner they might try one of the places I mentioned above and which they did not go to the day before.
A great drink to top off the day can later be enjoyed at Bar Savanh at Restaurant Indochine right by the river with a majectic view of the Container Port in Neumuehlen (some 500 metres from where the ferry landed, but to the right of the ferry landing in a very modern office building.

My wife and daughter had a great time in Hamburg and saw almost all your suggestions hsv - thanks again - except the Strandweg which we couldn't find. They stayed at a B&B at Camping Buchholz in Stellingen (www.camping-buchholz.de), convenient for public transport.
I've posted some photo's on http://marksmalley.blogspot.com/.
