URGENT ! Has anyone recently stayed at the Danieli in Venice?
I've heard conflicting reports about the Danieli in Venice. It's normally a deluxe hotel and highly rated, but I recently heard that it was not well-kept and the hotel staff were rude. Various other complaints were made so I would like more opinions from anyone who's been there recently. Thanks.

Rude Staff

I have heard of many time people thinking that the staff at luxury hotels being rude. I have found that most of the time they are just reserved and not as outgoing as other hotels because that is how some of the people staying there prefer it.

I have also found that if I initiate being friendly and smile I will get the same response. Same goes for restaurants.
Stayed at Danieli a few years. Actually I checked in and when I saw the below par room I checked out immediately. The room was tiny and the small window opened for a view of a wall and an alley way.
The staff could care less and we left immediately. For the price it was a major disappointment.

I stayed at the Danieli last September. I thought the hotel was beautiful and has an excellent location! (the location alone was worth it) The hotel had an "old charm" but was not neccessarily run-down.

I didn't think the staff was rude - reserved perhaps - but not rude. They were helpful with resteraunt recommendations and tour information.

But then again, I'm a Starwood Platinum Frequent Stayer and used points to stay at the hotel for "free" so I'm not sure I would have the same outlook if I paid the high prices.

Last summer I researched several hotels in Venice including Danieli. We opted for the Europa & Regina and LOVED it. We did walk and visit the several that we didn't chose and decided that we had made the right choice. The Europa & Regina is in the same luxury catagory as the Danieli. the staff etc. was fabulous. We had a large room with a gigantic balcony (with table and chairs) and had such a magnificent view from our balcony when we sat outside each morning with coffee. If you can switch to Europa & Regina you won't be sorry.

I've stayed at the Danieli before and it was fine though my favorite of all the Starwood Luxury Collection hotels in Venice is called The Hotel Europa and Regina. I think you would be happier in this hotel if it is available. It is very nice and a better location IMO. Jill

Having stayed at the Europa Regina last month and having walked through the lobby of each of the other 3 deluxe hotels near San Marco, i.e. Danieli, Gritti and Bauer, we would rate them as follows in order of preference without consideration of price:

Bauer
Gritti
Europa
Danieli

The Bauer is directly next door to the Europa but had a much nicer main entrance directly on a piazza. The Europa's entry was through a maze of unattractive alley's. The location of the Danieli was in our opinion a negative since it was in the middle of the most busy area on the lagoon. The Gritti had a great location but we preferred to be closer to San Marco.

Having said that, we were happy with our choice but acknowledge that the Europa is a half notch rating below the other 3 and priced as such. When we booked, the 3 others were nearly $100 per night higher. Our general reaction was that all deluxe hotels in Venice are close to twice the price of similar properties in other cities, i.e. London & Rome. We paid half the price last May at the Crown Plaza Minerva in Rome for a hotel that was at least the quality of the Europa. But it is Venice and that alone makes it worth the price.

Great minds must think alike! Just after I posted this message and before I got any responses, I made a reservation at the Europa and Regina just in case I heard bad things about the Danieli(at a great price, I might add). Thanks for your comments !

Linda: Our preference would be the order in which you listed them: Europa, Londra, Metropole. The Londra is located a few doors down from the Danieli and had a modern and elegant lobby which seemed to be recently renovated and cutting edge similar to the 'W ' hotel chain here in the states. Again a very busy location and not our preference. The Metropole is on the Riva Degli Schiavoni just like the Danieli and Londra but further down about two bridges going toward the arsenal. We thought the lobby was nice but in general the property did not seem to be up to the others and I believe priced as such. The location was not as busy as the others on the Schiavoni and seemed to be in an area that was getting away from the main tourist area. Although it was our second choice we were glad we choice the Europa. Having said that, if you can get a good deal in a room, it seemed perfectly nice and includes full breakfast in the daily room rate.

I stayed at both places and enjoyed both of them. Location is fine for both hotels. We got very nice rooms at these hotels.
The roof top restaurant at Danieli was very good, while the restaurant at the Europa Regina was so-so (but the Europa experience dates back from 98, so the Chef may have changed).

Stayed at the Bauer last August. We stayed in the Palazzo and had a huge room, very well appointed, with jacuzzi in tub and painted ceiling. Elegance all the way and appears that hotel just completed total renovation. Fabulous location as well. It is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World and when we were there, they had a bed and breakfast package most reasonable in comparison to similar properties.
