Urgent

Looks like we're going to be stuck at Schipol tonight. Any recommendations for rooms?

sandi_travelnut Oct 7th, 2005 06:01 AM

Absolutely! My recommendation is that you repost your question with something more informative in the title. People often pass up threads like yours if they don't have an idea of what's being asked by reading the title. Try "looking for hotel recommendation in Schipol". Also provide your budget information with it and how many people are going to be in the room.

put your stuff in a locker and take the train into town--runs ever ten minutes or so and takes 20 min. in town, try Estherea, our current favorite but a bit pricey near 200, Schiller on Rembrant'splein probably in same category, Owl or Hestia near Leidesplein--have been there recently but expect prices to be between 100 and 150.

Not knowing the times of your planes but Amsterdam is a quick and easy train ride and if that isn't feasible, there are very nice rooms inside Schipol. We've used them during layovers when we've gone to Amsterdam for an afternoon but had a really early flight in the morning.

Hello sheila, the website for Schipol airport is: www.schipol.com.

There is a Hilton Hotel right at the airport (not sure if that is what you wanted or if you wanted to go into Amsterdam). The website lists several hotels.

I just checked their website and they show flight delays due to heavy fog AND also the fact that an old WWII bomb has been discovered on their new runway.

Best wishes to you.

There is also the accor hotel on the first floor (not sure near which gate)...if thats sold out, try a search on expedia or a similar website..

massagediva Oct 7th, 2005 06:20 AM

There is also a tourist's center in the airport that will make hotel reservations for you.

And the Sheraton is even closer, and connected to the terminal by covered walkway, than the Hilton. The accor is probably the most convenient.

I suspect our dear friend Sheila is distressed at the moment.
For many years she has provided Fodorites with meticulous advice on visiting her beautiful Scotland.
Thank you to those posters who have given her tips for finding a last minute room for tonight.

Is Caroline in Holland?

Kavey Oct 7th, 2005 08:26 AM

Ibis (airport)
Schipholweg 181
1171 PK BADHOEVEDORP
NETHERLANDS
Tel : (+31)20/5025100

There is also a hotel called NH Schiphol but I can't find address for you.

Hope these help.

Try http://www.hrs.de and http://www.hotels.de . I've seen the Crowne Plaza for cheap prices like 82 Euros per night.

I think sheila should be cut some slack for not taking the time to more carefully word her title. As a veteran Fodorite she of course knows better, and it's clear she found herself in a stressful and unusual situation. She may have even pressed 'post my reply' without evaluating her own title.
I'd like the idea that in addition to trying some generic hotel websites, she turned to her friends at Fodors for advice.

This time it isn't a matter of educating a newbie--'teaching a person to fish'--in order to optimize the information gathering for the future.

Sheila:

I stayed in the Hilton at the airport two weeks ago. It’s a standard business-class Hilton and obviously expensive because it is a short walk (there is also a bus) from the terminal. However, it is convenient and an excellent choice if you have an early flight next morning. There is also a Sheraton, in the terminal itself, which is more expensive.

Rex: you are pompous: who made YOU responsible for posting etiquette on this board?

Here's what ratestogo.com is showing open at the airport for tonight:

This is what showed up on laterooms.com for Amsterdam:

I hope that sheila is able to post back here at some point and let us know if she got a hotel room. I almost had that happen to me at Schipol one time due to heavy fog. Not a fun time! "Urgent" is certainly something I would have typed if I had had access to a computer. Best wishes to you sheila...it is now 9:00pm in Amsterdam. I hope that you have had a good dinner, some wonderful wine and a good hotel room. Best wishes to you!

If you have time, I'd recommend staying in town instead of at the airport. The Hotel Residence le Coin is very well-priced and in a great location. It's on Nieuwe Doelenstradt (sp?), across from the Hotel de L'Europe, next to the Cafe Katoen, and the Hotel Doelan is down the street. Some cab drivers hadn't heard of it, as it's a relative newcomer, but it's quite nice. Seven or so row houses transformed into a hotel. Great neighborhood for strolling.

Sheila, you most likely have found a place by now. Your fans here wish you a safe return
Urgent!! gets your attention, asking for a hotel does not.
I wish posters would not tell others how we should do it. It would make for a dull forum. Try posting about travel instead.
