Upgrading to Biz Class on Iberia Airlines

Hoping somone can help out here. My wife and I are flying to Madrid next in a couple weeks and we purchased coach tickets through Google Flights on Iberia Airlines. Iberia is a partner of American Airlines and we happen to have a ton of American award miles that we'd like to use to upgrade to business class. When I called Iberia they said we couldn't try to do that prior to the day of the flight which seems odd. Also, when I called American, they can't even see the flight in their system since they were purchased directly from Iberia via google. Looking for an upgrade expert!!!

The AAdvantage forum at Flyertalk has a thread dedicated to upgrading with AA miles on partner airline flights. It has specific rules, which are plenty complicated, but one theme seems to be that AA can't help you unless you booked directly through AA. You might want to delve into the thread, but there are plenty of people who call AA direct and wind up getting different information from different agents.

The likely reason that Iberia says they can't do it till the day you fly is that the inventory for mileage upgrades might already be zeroed out, but they might do it on a last minute basis if Business still has seats empty on the day of travel.

BTW, just to be clear, you did not purchase your tickets from Google, but from Iberia. Google is only a search engine and does not sell tickets, just gives you links to where you can (usually) buy the itinerary it presented to you. It is not unheard of that an itinerary presented by Google turns out to be unavailable when you get to the airline's website.

Welcome to Fodors.

Ditto both of the above posts -- you bought from Iberia, not Google. And FlyerTalk is your friend. Might be worth registering on that site (same company as Fodors but different log in) . If you post there provide a lot of details -- date, flight number, fare bucket etc - members on FT can look up your specific flight and see what sort of upgrade options you might have.
