Updated Paris Itinerary

I have posted my itinerary before, but now we've added so much to the original and changed so much, I would like your thoughts on this one. Travelling are my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, husband, and 3 children (10, 4, & toddler). My mil has volunteered to watch children at night for DH and myself to have a nice dinner alone, and another night for S-i-L, dh, and myself to go out. Thanks again!

Sat: arrive via train at 12:45 (no jet lag, since this is a second stop)
settle into apartment (we will already have keys, so basically just dropping off bags), get a few basic groceries at the Franprix next to our apartment, then to Eiffel tower, Seine river cruise (from Pont d'Alma), and Arc de Triomphe.

Sun: Catacombs, Louvre, Jardin des Tuileries, & Place de la Concorde

Mon: Disneyland Paris

Tues: Memorial de la Deportation, Notre Dame, Conciergerie, Ste Chappelle, Pont Neuf. A nice dinner out...

Wed: Versailles

Thur: Walk around Marais (where our apartment is) in the morning, then to Montmartre (esp. seeing Moulin Rouge & Sacre Coeur) in the afternoon, then Pere Lachaise Cemetery. A few hours at a jazz club at night.

Fri: Latin Quarter in the morning (esp. bouquinistes & Shakespeare & Co), then Hotel des Invalides/Napoleon's Tomb and Musee de l'Armee in the afternoon.

Sat: no plans for Saturday. We leave Paris via train at 7 pm, and are leaving our bags in the apartment til it's time to leave...probably use this time to see/do things we didn't have time for on the so-called scheduled day.

I really don't want to be constantly rushing...what do you think?

Hi O,

> really don't want to be constantly rushing...what do you think?

With your itinerary you will be constantly rushing.

I suggest that the best time for a Seine Cruise is in the evening.

With only a week, I suggest skipping Versailles.

On Sunday, I would skip the Catacombs. Start from the Arc and walk downhill to the Louvre.

I think tht Montmartre and Pere Lachaise is a bit much for one day.

from Pl Pigalle, take the Montmartrobus up to Sacre Coeur.

May I suggest, that especially with kids, you plan one thing for the morning and one for the afternoon?

The rest of your time can be spent just absorbing Paris and letting the kids have some free time to run around.

Enjoy your visit.

I think that for Thursday 'Walk around Marais, in the morning, then to Montmartre (esp. seeing Moulin Rouge & Sacre Coeur) in the afternoon, then Pere Lachaise Cemetery. A few hours at a jazz club at night" you planned too much things. In Montmartre you will visit not only sacre Coeur, but also Place de Tartre with all painters, small restaurants, etc.

I would visit Orsay instead Louvre; Louvre is too big and in 3-4 hours you will do not feel it! If you want, enter only in the courtyard of Louvre to see the buildings and the pyramided.

Or, as you are at Place Concorde, maybe visit Orangerie (not only Monet, but all beautiful painting of Renoir, Sysley, etc)

On Friday, you can enter at M. Rodin, is nearby.

Octinparis...I had the same "Montmarte" plan that included Pere Lachaise. I never got there. The day had too much in it with Montmarte and Sacre Couer. Also, on my first trip to Paris, I had Versailles on my list for a whole day and never made that either. I agree with Valtor, skip Versailles on a week-long first trip.

Also, Ira had a good point to let the kids have some free time to run around. Champs de Mar park at the Eiffel Tower or the Tuilleries would be very nice for the children.

When I was there last September there were pony rides for the children in Champs de Mar on SUnday afternoon and there were lots of families spending time together there. Your kids might like that.

Whatever you do, have a fun trip!

If you want to visit the Louvre, could I suggest Friday night - they have a special opening and lower price after 6 pm. There are less people. We then went out for dinner around 8.30/9.00pm.

I also think Montmartre etc. is too much on the Thursday.

Since you have an apartment, the market at Mouffetard early in your visit is a must. It is open every day from 8.00am to 2.00pm. You will pick all kinds of goodies to eat and cook. The kids will love it too.

gee, I didn't think this schedule was so hectic, and I'm a pretty laidback traveler. I don't see it as a lot of rushing, seems very reasonable to me.

The only exception would be that one day with Montmartre in it, as you are combining that with Pere Lachaise, all in just the afternoon. I'd drop something from that, perhaps. It's not impossible, though. Forget the Moulin Rouge from that day, even though I suppose it won't take much time, it will take some and is a completely worthless thing to do. You are probably expecting it to look like some great windmill from 100 years ago like you've seen in photos, but it looks like nothing. It's just a modern storefront facade in-between a disco and some shop on the other side. I guess there is some fake windmill thing on the roof.

It actually looks a lot like the itinerary we've planned for our Paris trip in Oct - what days will you be there?

My daughter (15 at the time) was soooo disappointed with the Moulin Rouge but there is no way in the world that we could have stopped her going to see it. TG we didn't buy tickets for the show.
