Update on Paris situation
 

I was encouraged to read comments from people in Paris advising not to cancel travel plans but they are all about a week old. I am planning a trip with my two young daughters the week of November 22nd. Can anyone give me an update on the situation in Paris?

Forecast: Chilly, lights winds out of the north with a good chance of showers.

Stay out of the suburbs and don't get a rental car.

I don't in any way wish to deter you but that car torched in the Marais was hardly in the suburbs.

I suspect the city is safe enough but if a major incident occurs in Paris it will blow this whole thing wide open and apparently getting to the real heart of the matter is not something everyone over there wants to do.

Things semm to be subsiding, but is it the calm before the storm? Who knows?I also suspect the city is safe enough, but appreciate the potential for more trouble at any time. It is like that in many areas of the world.

I would go if things stay as they are and it was just me or say me and my battle-ax of a mother-in-law. I would not take along young children or an elderly person.

The cars were at Place de la Republique, at best described as on the far fringes of the Marais. The violence in general is subsiding as the sensationalizing news sniffers head for the tragedy in Jordan.

I hope that all this pandemonium will be over quickly.My French niece lives in Paris, luckily her apartment is located near the Eiffel Tower..As a matter of fact, from her kitchen window she can see the Tower.At night the tower is a magnificent scenery, all light up..what a sight..

I certainly wouldn't cancel my plans if I had already made arrangements and had tickets or anything and were coming from afar. If I were just driving there from somewhere in Europe, I would probably wait and see how things were going just before I went. Things have been a little better in last day as others said. I think in most any place these kind of events occur, they sort of peter out after a bit and you don't have the same major riots for weeks on end -- except in war zones, now that news is what really depresses me when I read it. I know they are now forbidding retail sale of cans of gas carburants in many places, but that seems expected.

An association of the banlieues was planning a peace march on the Champs-Elysees for Armistice Day (tomorrow), but the govt. denied permission, and now they are calling for a sit-in demonstration in the CHamps de Mars near the Peace Wall -- that call is for 3 pm tomorrow.

Sensationalizing news? I don't think 487 vehicles burned down from 617 the night before is sensationalizing the news.

Seems pretty bad to me.

I just got back from Paris two days ago, on Tuesday. Honestly if it wasn't for watching BBC and CNN in our hotel each night, we wouldn't have known anything was even going on. There was no evidence of any rioting that we saw in any of the historic center of Paris, and we walked a lot. We didn't see any heightened security, and we did not feel threatened or uneasy in any way. Not to say that it wouldn't or couldn't get worse, but this was our experience.
