Update Autoeurope

I originally asked a question on forum re: Autoeurope and got a lot of advice. What I would recommend to anyone booking is to make double/triple sure you check your vouchers before you leave, particularly if you make any changes. I was charged an extra 22 pounds when I changed pick-up/drop-off time at Heathrow, and intially had a difficult time having someone listen to my story - my first contact at 1-800 # was very rude. Eventually I faxed original voucher to supervisor - they did not believe me that I had been quoted lower price. I was called back and told they would honour original voucher but would have to pay entire amount before I left. We leave in 5 more days for England, am hoping everything will be ok when we pick up car.

I have used AutoEurope in the past and been pleased. For my trip to France next month I booked through them again. The reservationist tried to be helpful with my questions and I finally decided on a compact car. He assured me the location in Paris I had selected had the Ford Focus and even noted it on my voucher. When I contacted Budget direct (that's who I'm getting the car through), they told me they did not have any Ford Focus in their inventory, and the only compact car they have is Peugeot, which is what I guess we're going to rent. We paid in full already, so I do not anticipate problems when we get there. I'll report my experience in the near future.

Autoeurope is a front outfit; you actually rent from the company that offers the best price. I rejected an offer from AE that meant renting from another company and insisted on Avis.
The lowest price is not always the best price. My Avis rentals have been
smooth transactions.

Al, AVIS is fine, good company, but if you can save money and still rent from a reputable company? Avis is certainly not the cheapest, in some european countries Avis is one of the more expensive rentals. I dealt with AutoEurope before, they got me a car from Europcar, one of the best companies in europe, and they were very honest, efficient and the least expensive (Switzerland).
As always, you have to carefully read the voucher before leaving home.
Amik

I agree fully that you take the best overall deal. My point was that I went with Avis because it was fairly close to the "best" deal money wise. Having had two good experiences with Avis, I decided that the $10 extra dollars I saved was not worth to go with a company I did not know. Had it been a well-known company, I say yes. I think my point is that Auto Europe is not the actual company issuing the car. They are the front end of the deal so to speak. I took Avis over Who Flew By Night despite the fact that Avis was a little higher. If the choice was Avis versus Kemwell, then I would go with the cheaper of the two.

Maybe I'm wrong, but Autoeurope will normally tell you who they are using for your rental --at least they have for me for all four rentals I am doing through them for my upcoming trip. Two of those are through Avis and two are through Europecar. Oddly enough, they are giving me a much better price on the rentals they are using Avis for than I was able to get directly with Avis.

...Of course, Patric, and that's the whole idea behind AutoEurope, they are "Wholesalers", buying tons of rentals and getting better prices, that an individual can't get.
And they'll get you the best rate among competitors in each market (town). They'll find you one rental company in Edinburgh, Scotland, and a different company in Munich, Germany.
That's the reason I like working with them.
Amik
