Upcoming Travel Plan In Romania
 

I'm just planning a 3 week trip to Romania for my next trip, and all I want to start from Budapest because I've never been there. The rest of the travelling will be in Romania. I'd appreciate some info on the following: 1) Fly Buda - renting vehicles or cars in Budapest and the best destinations to visit there, and 2) Whats the best itinerary for hanging to see the real face of Romania and nearby areas of the sea. Train? Rental car? I will getting it with Romanian tourism and some other guides but the input here is always valuable. Thanks !!

If you did not get there yet, I'd suggest you fly to the Black Sea shore (you have for example direct internal flights from Cluj to Constanta) (the blueair company seems to have direct flights) - and from there you can rent a car or take a bus to Tulcea, the "gate" to the famous Danube Delta.

If I were you, I woudn't miss a visit of this natural reserve - in therms of biodiversity it comes just behind the Galapagos and the Great Barrier Reef.

Clifton wrote a trip report a long time ago which is a must read. I also wrote one quite a while back traveling through the Carpathians and starting in Budapest. Photos are attached, but might no longer be available due to technical changes in Flickr. I'll try to upgrade the information. I also went to Bucharest a couple years ago. I'm not sure I could find my own trip report back since the format change (it was also under my prior screen name). Curses, Blessings and Cabbage is what I called it, if the search is working on very old data again..

Anyway, we also started and ended in Budapest. For a similar three weeks, our route went roughly (we meander and don't plan to the minute):

Budapest,
Timisoara (gorgeous city under some grit):
Hunedoara (very cool Corvin Castle, came by way of "Gates of Transylvania" plus Roman ruins and Densus church);
Sibiu (fav city for walks, there are interesting villages just to the west),
Fagaras Pass back and forth for the views and with a bit of a hike;
Bran & Rasnov (cool in their own way but pretty touristy);
Sinaia (beauty & the palaces and monastery);
Sighisoara (Too much to list in the walled citadel, with stops to various fortified "Saxon" churches on the way or as day trips such as Beirtan, Harmann and others);
Bukovina (various UNESCO listed fresco painted monasteries, went by way of Bicaz gorge)
Maramures (this is a very "preserved in time" sort of place. Wooden churches, sort of isolated communities. The "Merry Cemetery" in Sapanta)

Also stopped in Tokaj and Eger on the way way back through Hungary.

We regret that we skipped ahead and missed Brasov but worried we short ourselves in places we really wanted to see later. I don't really regret not visiting Bucharest.


We used Budget to rent the car, via AutoEurope. Picked up at a hotel on the Buda side. At the time, it was one of the only agencies/arrangements allowing a Hungarian car to cross into Romania (or vice versa for that matter). It's been a long while, a lot may have changed on that front.

We started and finished in Bucaharest, and travelled around by train. But driving around looked simple enough, except perhaps when it came to parking in towns.....parking enforcers were very keen everywhere.

janisj. Doesn't really matter how old the thread is.....it brings a thread about Romania back to the top of the pile. Those of us that have spent time there know that's where it ought to be, it's a quality destination, and great value for money.

I'd missed how big the gap was between post 1 and 2, but I suppose LL is right. At least some chat about it surfaced for awhile, visible among the usual half dozen or so forum favourites. Maybe someone else, who hadn't thought about trying Romania, will give it a chance (that's how we ended up going).

My only point was -- people are trying to help the OP -- and apparently she ain't interested.

If you want to extol Romania -- You could do a TR that everyone interested people will read

LancasterLad, I read your trip report and it is amazing! My daughter and son-in-law went to Romania for their honeymoon and loved it. Their only minor complaint is that they went in October and it was a little too quiet for them. Romania is definitely on my bucket list, but probably not for a few more years. But I will print our your report for future reference.

Thanks Karen. Alas, I still need to fInish the Central Asia one. I got sick and now I'm finally on medication that works I haven't gotten back to it.

I hope you do finish it when possible, thursdays. Central Asia is of keen interest to us.

We spoke to several locals while we were there in June, and they openly spoke about the general hatred which was building up against their corrupt Government. So much for the togetherness of the EU!

Well Lad as I'm sure you know, the EU is the one that insisted on the governement working towards reduced corruption before full access to the EU, unfortunatly the old Eastern countries are all slipping back towards corrupt hard leaders with Poland, Hungary and Romania drifting while the EU has never been good at resolving these internal issues, it now needs 100% support of 26/27 countries to sanction one country.... So it is down to the local citizenship of whome 25% don't live in Romania.

I'm sure that the EU 26/27 will 'try' something. That all costs a lot of money, paid for the tax payers of the few donor countries.....roll on BREXIT!

It hasn't really made much news in the UK.....the Remainers wouldn't appreciate the headlines.
