Upcoming Italy Trip....

Hi guys

Quick question. My Husband and I are going to Italy in September for 8 days (including travel days). We are planning on spending 3 days in Rome and 3 days in Florence (we lose 2 to travel). I was thinking of doing a one day trip to Venice. Is it worth it? Or should I leave Venice for another trip? Are 3 days enough for each Rome and Florence? We are not museum people, so we'll be skipping all of those.

Thanks everyone

Raquel

Leave it until next time

I would strongly urge you not to do a day trip to Venice. First, it takes too long to get there and back; second, and more importantly, you will get the worst possible impression of Venice if you experience it as part of the daytripping mobs. Save Venice for another trip and give it the time it deserves.

If you intend to skip all the museums, then consider giving Florence two days and Rome four days.

If youre not into museums then 2 days in Florence should do. You really need 3 in Rome though. I suppose 1 day in Venice would be better than 1, but you would need to have a whole day and night.

Sorry -I shouldve typed ...better than none!!!

Hi R,

I recommend against a daytrip to Venice. Many people who do it come back disliking the city, beacuse they were too rushed.

An overnight would the least time I would spend there.

Better yet, why not skip Rome and visit Venice and Florence?

As much as I love Florence, if you are not interested in art, or the Renaissance, you could probably take a day away from Florence and add it to Rome. But I should ask: if you aren't going to museums, are you going to churches? Duomo, Baptistry, San Lorenzo (Medici Tombs), Santa Croce? Palazzo Pitti?

What attracts you to Florence? If you let us know what you want to do there, we can probably help you balance your time.

But I have to go along with the others here on Venice: no day trips to Venice or anywhere else! You barely have enough time for two places, let alone any more.

Why are you picking these places to go to in Italy? What do you enjoy doing? Is this a vacation? Might you prefer being in smaller or more romantic towns?

Hey! I've been to Florence twice and still not been in a museum there. Next time maybe.
The weather was too nice to be indoors!Florence is such a beautiful city to walk around.

I would skip Venice as well- and add another day in Rome.

Hi Raquel, we know what you do not enjoy but not sure what you do enjoy. I agree if you are not interested in museums you may want to skip going to Florence.

Have you purchased your airline tickets yet?

If not perhaps think about flying into Rome spending say three days there and then take the train to Venice and spend the balance of your trip in Venice and fly home from Venice. This is called an openjaw or multicity flight.

Or, again not knowing what your interest are, perhaps fly into Rome, stay on the Amalfi Coast, go back to Rome and stay there and fly home from Rome.

More information as to what does interest you two regarding Italy would bring up a lot of suggestions from Fodorites.
