Hi<BR><BR>Don't know about the university, but La Rochelle is a lively medieval port on the atlantic coast about 100 miles north of Bordeaux.<BR><BR>Great seafood.<BR><BR>Peter<BR>

La rochelle is a great port. Fishing a main undustry. I tasted the best grilled lobster on the waterfront at a restaurant called "Les Flots." the father of the chef/owner has also a first class restaurant on the beach, <BR>"Richard Couteneau". This department is the Charente-Maritime.

Thanks for the info on Les Flots. We'll be in La Rochelle and on the Ile de Re in September. Any special recs on Ile de Re? We're staying at Le Richelieu and will eat there one night but could use recs for lunches and another evening meal. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Hi<BR><BR>Here is an interesting eating experience, nearby.<BR><BR>Fouras is a small town built at the landward end of a sand spit.<BR><BR>The road along the sand spit has oyster beds on each side.<BR><BR>Wooden cabin restaurants on stilts serve super fresh oysters, lobsters and other seafood.<BR><BR>At the end of the spit is a restaurant called Le Fumier (possible memory fade !) which was also good.You can also take a ferry to Ile d'Aix from here.<BR><BR>Peter<BR>http://tlp.netfirms.com<BR>

Don't miss moules mouclade (mussels in cream/curry sauce) regional specialty. Might sound a little strange, but it's delicious.

You'rew right,Sue, and its something we prepare at home. Mussels still are one of the best buys at the market. americans do not appreciate this wonderful inexpensive crustaceans.

Think I may be allergic to mussels, but just a couple couldn't be too bad for me. Afraid none of us is able to be to helpful to Jared. That's the trouble with asking about education rather than food, I guess.

everyone thanx for your emails... i mean it.<BR><BR>Julie, whilst none of it was "helpful" I have learnt mroe than I expected. As an educator I was just expecting to go for that purpose, but now I see that there is heaps to take advantage of. I'll check out these recommendations for sure. I have soem otehr questions though, if I may.<BR><BR>I'm at La Rochelle for 4 days<BR><BR>I was thinking of taking a side trip (o/night) to Nantes and then another in Bordeaux.<BR><BR>After that I need to make my way up to Lucerne. Its a fair drive. I can drive 600 miles by myself easy in one go (although i'll have anotehr driver with me) but would you recommend a stopover on the way.<BR><BR>I think i'll have time to appreciate the location for half a day (and sleep a bit too)<BR>thanks
