Unique Bed and Breakfasts between Edinburgh and York?
 

We will be traveling from Edinburgh to York by car and are interested in staying someplace between the two. We'll likely stop and see a bit of the eastern end of Hadrian's wall, stay the night somewhere, then stop at Thirsk to see Jame's Herriot World in the morning before heading into York. In fact, we may just want to stay outside of York for our visit there rather then right in York, so depending upon distance, this might be the place for that. The stayover would be between Hadrian's wall and York then, closer to York. We love unique experiences (not uncomfortable though!) Any recommendations for a nice bed and breakfast that would offer some special memories, lower costs preferred but negotiable depending upon location, that would fit the bill?

No need to respond - I've booked a place that sounds lovely - 20 minute train ride to York with service from early morning until nine at night!

Certainly. It is the White Horse Lodge in Thirsk. Of course, haven't actually stayed yet - just booked - but it gets good reviews on Trip Advisor.

...also, don't know as its particularly unique, but sounds like a nice location in the country....

It's just a few miles up the road from where I live - I'll take more notice of it next time I drive past! Thirsk is a pleasant little market town in the Vale of Mowbray close to the Yorkshire Dales and Moors. It's pretty sleepy until market days or racedays when it comes alive. It sounds a good location for what you are after, although I would struggle to call it 'unique' in any way!
If you are there one evening there's a marvellous, tiny little independent cinema (volunteer run) just off the main square called The Ritz. Just shows one film at a time, all red velvet and plush seats, and well used by the locals (a night out there costs us £9 in total for both of us!).

Morgana - how very neat! Loved your input. The night at the theatre sounds like just the kind of unique experience my siblings and I are very interested in. While we love to see the main sights of a place - especially a historic place - at night we would much rather mix it up with the locals at the town theatre or local pub then spend it in a fancy four star restaurant that the tourist books rave about. As far as the unique bed and breakfast - everything that seemed to fit that description was too full, too far (from York) or too expensive. I really like neat and clean and in a pretty locale too, and it sounds like it has that. Let me know what you think when you drive by it. Thank you again!

Went past the White Horse Lodge at the weekend - looks fine but it is in the midle of nowhere! Alongside the main road but not within walking distance of Thirsk or anywhere else. You'll be fine with a car of course.

Thank you Morgana for taking a look! Yes, I did the google street view (arm chair travelers best friend) and it is definitely in the country, but we do love that, and as you said, with the car we should be okay. After three nights in London, a night on the sleeper train, a night in Ft. William and two nights next to the Royal mile in Ediburgh, we'll probably be ready for some quiet countryside. It looks lovely!

tarquin - thank you for the suggestion - I'll look it up, as we still have not finalized our second to the last night ofof the trip between York and Windsor (last night is Windsor so we can catch the plane the following morning.)
