Underwater ruins in Turkey?
As part of my plan to convince my father to go to Turkey I purchased a coffee table book titled "Turkey from the Air." There are a lot of beautiful pics, but on pages 108-109 they have a picture of a woman floating on her back in what looks like very shallow water. You can see ruins in the water, pieces of columns and such. Does anyone have any idea where this may be? Believe it or not there is no caption to the pic!

Possibly "Cleopatra's baths" on the Mediterranean coast?

It is Pamukkale outside of City of Denizli, in Egean Region. Also the shallow water is hot spring water and you can also drink it, when it comes fresh from the source near the pool. There is red springs there in Karahayit where the hotels are.
Also very nice in winter while watching the snowy mountains when u r in the open air hot spring pool. |
You might find underwater ruins in a number of places in Turkey. One place is near the small town of Kekova, which is near Kas and Kalkan. The partly submerged Byzantine foundations and ruins are found along the shore of Kekova Island, also known as Tersane. It is an archaeol site and no swimming is permitted.
Another place is at Pamukkale, which is near Denizli. Here the Romans built a large spa city, Hierapolis, to take advantage of the natural flowing hot springs. I don't know if the pools are still open but at one time you could swim in some of the pools which had submerged fragments of marble columns. |
Heirapolis and Pamukkale are fantastic. We were there about 14 years ago. At that point you could wander all over the springs and wade in the pools of Pamukkale but I think that was stopped due to the damage caused. See:

It may be Pamukkale. Does anyone know for sure whether the springs are closed?

Sounds like Pammukale to me. But being Turkey can also be any other such similar place.
