Under the Tuscan Sun - The Movie

Has anyone read about the movie that is coming out in September? Based "loosely" on the book, Diane Lane plays the central character, a lawyer who quits her stressful job in the US and buys a ramshakle house in Cortona to rediscover herself. She finds and falls for an Italian hunk. It sounds like Frances Mayes fans will be wailing, a whole new influx of folks will be headed to Cortona, and I want to beat the rush to find out first where to find my Italian own hunk!

I found the book quite boring actually but having since been to Tuscany maybe I'll give it another go sometime. There are too many, 'we restored a villa' type books around and they all read the same after awhile.

I will certainly see the movie--Diane Lane is one good reason.
I thought the book was OK, but actually enjoyed VANILLA BEANS AND BRODO by Isabella Dusi more--check it out.

Hi Grasshopper!
I read the book a while back and don't remember it
BUT! I will most likely see any movie filmed in Tuscany/Italy or for that matter Europe!
Diane Lane is also a good reason, although I am wondering who can be the "hunk"?

Well, it is kind of a shame that the filmmakers thought it would be better to replace her American husband who was with her the whole time, first as her boyfriend.

I guess they thought an Italian hunk would be better box office than a mild mannered, nice, loyal American professor. I do wonder who they are going to choose to play him though, I don't know about any current Italian hunk actors.

A hunk, Grasshopper? You mean like a hunk of formaggio?

I haven't read either of Mayes' books, but I'll probably see the movie...and I LOVED Cortona!

Capo, I remember you were referred to here as a hunk at one time.

Natalia, I agree. I wonder how her husband feels about being written out of the movie!

Haven't read that particular book, but if there's a movie with travel... especially if the next trip is a ways off.

Somewhat related:
Just saw a promo on HBO a couple of nights ago for a drama wih Maggie Smith called "My House in Umbria". Looked like they took advantage of the location scenery. First run on May 25th.

http://www.hbo.com/films/umbria/

I agree Scarlett, I would always watch any movie filmed in Tuscany no matter what the story. Recent favourites are Up at the Villa, and Tea with Mussolini.
And the old favourites for Italy are Three Coins in the Fountain and An Affair to Remember. That's going back a bit.

Oh, and Kathrine Hepburn's "Summertime". J. (Hi, Grasshopper, I have a walk for you to try from Cannero to Cannobio, if you're game while in Gerra-G.)

Hi JW, please do tell us about it!

I'm surprised that so many here haven't read Under the Tuscan Sun. It was surely worth reading. I enjoyed it. Also the great photos in her husbands follow on book.

I'm sure she got enough money from the sale of the rights to ease the pain of the changes.

No cheesy hunks for me, Capo! I'm told that Croatians are the most good looking men in the world (by my Croatian work collegue of course) so I'm hoping to connect with a Croatian hunk next month. I'll drag him back to Italy and Switzerland with me.

I read it and enjoyed many aspects of it, though also found some of it somewhat patronising.

I most enjoyed her descriptions of meals and food related topics.

I think changing the storyline from married couple to single woman meeting Italian hunk is enough of a change to make a bit of a mockery of using the title of her book.

It would surely be a completely different story just set in same area and using her well know book title as a marketing tool?

Or am I just too cynical at 1 am?

OK, G', I'm quoting from my Italian Lakes book: ". . 6.5km walk links Cannero to Cannobio, two of the finest Maggiore lake villages. (. . .take the lake steamer from Luino across to Cannero, walk to Cannobio, and return to Luino by boat from there.) Route: Leave Cannero along the Cannobio road, after 400m take the mule track that leads to Carmine Superiore, a very old and pretty village w/ 14th c. Romanesque church w/15c. frescos. Leave the village along the well-defined mule track, ignoring the track that leads to the lower village of Carmine Inferiore. The track rises in a series of big bends to reach Molineggi. From this tiny village there are beautiful views of the lake and several old mills. The same mule track continues from the mills and leads easily down to Cannobio."

What do you think? Are you willing to be my scout? (a western term, yes? She who goes ahead to unknown territory and reports back on safety and feasibility.) J.

JW, It sounds like a great way to justify more of that cannaloni! I have a feeling it will be easy to talk Judi into it.

Appropriate that you mention "western". I have driven 1200 miles EAST to be in the WEST!

I hate to drag this thread back on topic, but according to the Touchstone Pictures website, "Under the Tuscan Sun" is due to be released September 19. IMDB.com has a little more information at
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0328589

I found this synopsis on one a site:

"35 year-old writer Frances Mayes' perfect life takes an unexpected detour. Her divorce leaves her with writer's block and extremely depressed. Her best friend suggests 10 days in Tuscany. There, on a whim, Frances buys a villa. As she flings herself into her new life, she finds new friends and a new romance. Can this be what she dreamed of? Will love last under the Tuscan sun?"

I am right in thinking she went out with husband and they bought the villa together aren't I?

It's been a while since I read it.

OK book reviews I have found suggest that she had indeed recently divorced but went to Italy with her American boyfriend, Ed.
