Uncovering family history as we go -- new North Italy (Fiume Veneto) itinerary needed!
My mom and her two sisters are coming to England to visit me and we are all flying to Italy in search of their father's home soil but there was a lot of confusion in the process, trying to figure out exactly where his "home" was, as he came to Canada in the late 1920s. So after many phone calls to distant relatives, the truth of my grandfather's origins have finally been uncovered. We had very little information other than that my grandfather was born in Fiume, Italy and came to Canada when he was 11. As some of you know, Fiume was then taken over many times by various countries and has finally settled in Croatia.
HOWEVER, we have finally discovered that he was born and lived in Fiume Veneto, not Fiume, which is still firmly located on Italian soil in the province of Friuli-Venezia. Whew. Okay, now we have that settled, what do we do with our 5 days?!
We're flying in to Venice on the morning of 4 October and departing Venice on 9 October. Not a lot of time - 5 nights. I was thinking 2 nights in Venice and now I'm not really sure where to go - or how to get there - next. I know Fiume Veneto is a smallish village near Pordenone -- does anyone know of any hotels/farms/B&Bs in the area? What about trains/buses from Venice? I've been trying to use the SITA site to see if there are any buses to FV, but am not having any luck.
Any advice on this region is GREATLY appreciated!
Thank you!

Hi Meagan - There is a bus service connecting Pordenone and Fiume Veneto (- journey time: 15 mins).
You can catch the bus at Pordenone F.S (- railway station) if coming direct from Venice - or from Pordenone Autostazione (- bus station)
Here's the link:
http://www.atap.pn.it/linextraurbane.asp?menu=3
For train timetables from Venice see:
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
For hotels/B&B's/agriturismo in the Pordenone area go to:
http://www.turismo.fvg.it/pordenone-...alloggiare.asp
Hope this helps ...

I would consider basing yourself in Pordenone for the first couple of nights (Thursday and Friday) if you are not renting a car since Fiume Veneto is the focus of the trip, and because it and Pordenone could be pretty "dead" on a Sunday, but that won't matter in Venice.
Palace Hotel Moderno in Pordenone is recommended in both the Michelin Red Guide and DK Eyewitness Italy
http://www.palacehotelmoderno.it/
According to DK Saturday morning is the weekly outdoor market in Pordenone.
Maybe the hotel could arrange for a taxi driver for a couple of hours, so that you could tour the area of Fiume Veneto.
There is a Michelin recommended restaurant/hotel in Bannia a frazione (sub-hamlet) of Fiume Veneto, L'Ultimo Mulino, phone 0434 957911, closed on Sunday night and Monday (no website). There is also a restaurant at Fossa Mala vineyards/agriturismo in Fiume Veneto:
http://www.fossamala.it/Ristorante_A...mo/default.asp
So perhaps a journey for a meal at one of these places might also work.
Saturday afternoon, after morning market, you could take the train to Venice and spend your other 3 nights there.

Lovisa and Steve -- THANK YOU! I know now what to do and how to get there! This is why I love Fodor's.
Lovisa -- I had also just discovered the Fossa Mala website and may book us in a room there too, it looks lovely. That's great news about the market, my mom and aunts will love that.
I am considering renting a car though I personally have never driven outside of Canada (my husband has done the driving on previous trips) and I'm anxious to drive in Italy of all places as I've heard about drivers there
But my mom's maiden name is Zuliani and there's a winery in Farra d'Isonzo called Casa Zuliani, which I know they would get a kick out of going to (plus I've read their wines are quite good)...just not sure if I can muster up the courage to drive when my Italian isn't very good and I've never driven internationally...

Lisa - It doesn't appear Meagan has been on Fodor's since 2007 as there are not posts by her since. You can click on a person's screen name to find all their posts. There might be something in her other posts that will help you with the region.
