Umbria Restaurants

I'd be grateful for an recommendations for restaurants in Umbria - we are staying in Todi but will be visiting other towns on daytrips. We have a few favorites, but would love to try some new places. (We'll have kids, too, so we can't do anything too fancy.) Thanks.

We ate at the Hotel Umbra in Assisi and it was our best meal in Italy. Wonderful food, great outdoor terrace with vines overhead and the dark sky...fabulous! Its a little costly, but worth it!

My parents were in Umbria for two months and my mother sent me an e-mail about a day's itinerary in Assisi (we'll be nearby there in Sept.). I'll quote directly Mother's restaurant recommendations:

"If hungry, there is an excellent cafeteria on the right hand side of the main road going from the Basilica to the piazza. If you want something classier, go to La Fortezza, medium price range, excellent food. It is located on the left hand staircase when standing at the fountain. I think there is a flower shop at the corner and the staircase next to it."

Mother knows good food, and also knows her daughter doesn't know her way out of a paper bag (hence the exact directions!).

My wife and I spend a week or so in Umbria in the spring and fall. A few km north of Todi is the tiny hilltown of San Castello di Vibio. Park at the top of the hill (and entrance to the town). The hotel-restaurant is built into the hill. great food and wine in a lovely setting. BTW, the town boasts the worlds smallest performance theater. Ninety some seats in several balconies.

We stay in the Bevagna-Montefalco area and will be pleased to inform you of several places to stay and eat in that area if you so desire.

I also recommend La Fortezza in Assisi. We've eaten there several times, and it's always good. Pasta with black truffles is always good when it's in season. We've eaten some other places recommended there, but still like La F. the best. It's a nice restaurant, and I always see families there.

My husband and I spent two nights in Spoleto in June. Our hotel recommended Osteria del Trivio for dinner. We had one of the best meals that we've ever had in Italy! It's at Via del Trivio, 16. Owned by a wonderful couple: he greets the guests and she runs the kitchen. It was their one year anniversary of opening the osteria and both were so gracious! Lots of options for truffle lovers as well as those, like me, who are not. Ciao . . .
