Umbria or Tuscany
I've narrowed down a nice trip from Rome to Umbria or Tuscany. What are the pros and cons of either region. What are the top places to visit?
I have 3 days and 2 nights. I would like ideas on on location (home base) and special hotels/villas/castles to stay. Also, I have a flight out of Rome at 11:00 (on a Sunday). Is there a place that would be reasonable to drive from to get to the airport on time? How early should I be at the airport? Thanks... Current Thought: Home base: El Marsam - B&B near Umbertide. Visit: Day 1: Assisi Day 2: ??? Day 3: trip to Florence (train back to Rome) |
Scates, Given a choice and only 3 days to explore, I would do south Tuscany. The Umbertide location is a long way and too remote. Stay south of Siena, perhaps in Montalcino, and explore from there. Spend your last nite in Orvieto, less than 2 hours to FCO. Do a search and look at Palazzo del Capitano in San Quirico--a great central location for south Tuscany. Also look at Hotel Il Giglio in Montalcino--very reasonable and right in town. Good luck !

Bob,
If I stayed in San Quirico what's the best strategy for travel (Train/Car)? |
I'd spend both nights in Siena, and see Montalcino as one day-trip, and Orvieto on the way back to Rome.

A car is always preferable to see any part of Tuscany. There is bus service to some of the villages from Siena, but you are dependent on schedules.

If you put in a text search for Tuscany you will get dozens of ideas.
