Umbria on a Sunday
 

We'll be based in Perugia for 5 1/2 says.

Our list if day trips includes:
Spoleto
Spello/Assisi
Todi
Gubbio

One of our days is a Sunday.

Which of the places would be best for a Sunday?

I've not been to all of the places you mention, but I'd be inclined to select Spoleto. Lots of strolling, and you can walk up the trail to the fortification and look down on the Roman aquaduct and the "road to Rome." We sat and had a coffee near the top of the walk. Lovely!

From my report (2002): Sitting on the steps of the Duomo Sunday night - a band played in the piazza as a small car show (Maseratis, Fiats,& a Porsche etc) wrapped up and the parishioners made their way to a special mass - what a great scene.

Ian, I was also in Italy (but this was Arezzo) and the old Ferarris and Maseratis and Porsches etc were all in the grand piazza. I have video of the sound when they started up all the engines to continue their rally. Awesome!!!

I guess we won't go to Spello/Assisi for the opposite reason.

So it's down to staying in Perugia or Spoleto, Todi or Gubbio.

Yes simpsonc510, it was very cool. I forgot to mention . . . our car show was in Todi. All afternoon people were out & about in town - in the cafes, the gelateria etc.

Myer - in Todi most restaurants, cafes were open (and crowded) as well as the pizzeria & the gelateria. It looked like a lot of people from the countryside come in for Sunday to socialize.

Some of these towns will be deserted on weekdays. They might be a bit more lively on Sunday. I would pick Assisi as least likely to be deserted.

On the car theme, I was in Perugia a few years ago and started hearing all these horns, but couldn't see the cars. After a few minutes, you could see the cars far below (horns going the entire time) and they were winding their way up to the old town. It was older model Fiats parade. I videoed it, but have never uploaded it anywhere to share. They had a police escort and at the end were followed by a tow truck (guess some of the old Fiats break down often).

FYI - I think that was a Sunday and there was an antique market in the old town of Perugia.
