Umbria for three weeks with a toddler
 

Hello,

My partner is attending a three-week workshop in Citta di Castello, Umbria, this July and I'd like to check out the nearby region with our son. He's two years old and it's best not to mix up his schedule too much, so I was thinking to spend a week each in three different locations.

While Lake Trasimeno is quite close I have read on some other Fodor threads that it's not great for swimming and smells a bit fishy. There are some campground options with pools, playgrounds, tennis courts, etc etc on the lake, which could be fun for the kid, but I'm a bit worried about noise and density.

I was also looking at the coast and Fano seems to be quite close and with shallow waters for kids, and thought this might be a nice place to set up for a week?

Basically any advice is welcome! Our son loves swimming, animals, farms, playgrounds and pasta, but not so much with the crowds. I realize this is July in Italy and crowds are a bit par for the course, but mostly I'm just excited to bring him to this region of the world for a visit.

Umbria, the region of Italy, has beautiful nature. But nowadays is pretty shaken by earthquakes. Is advised to be well informed about the situation in the specific area where You would like to go.

Thanks for that 4driano. I imagine we'll be concentrating more on north Umbria closer to Citta di Castello, although Lake Bolsena also looks quite nice and that is of course further south closer to the quake zone... Will definitely look into specifics regarding earthquake damage before we make any decisions.

I've spent a good deal of timeon and around Lago Trasimeno and never thought it smelled fishy, and it would be fine for swimming for a toddler. I've been there in high season(July and August) and didn't think it was overwhelmingly crowded. There are myriad towns around the lake that are fun to visit, and the boat ride out to and visit to the island is delightful. The evening concerts at the castle in Maggiore are breathtaking.
