Umbria and Amalfi Coast - how many days in each area

Hi Everyone,

We will be traveling to Italy sometime in mid October 2008. We are looking at Umbria and Amalfi Coast/Capri. We are wondering how many days to spend in each area.

Umbria - we will have a car and are looking for a place to use as a base. We would like a small town with a number of restaurants for dinner in the evenings. We will do day trips to the hill towns.

Almalfi Coast - we are going to stay in Positano at San Pietro and then are thinking about a day or 2 on Capri.

Does anyone have and recs as to the best way to get from Rome to Almalfi? We don't think we want a car there but if we need to have one we will.

We are not sure how much time to spend in each area. We spent 11 days in Tuscany and did many day trips and loved it. I am more concerned about Amalfi Coast. I don't know how long it will take to view the cities.

Thank you

I vote for a little more time in Umbria, with a little more variety than the Amalfi coast. Assisi, Todi, Gubbio, and Perugia are all worth touring. Plus there's some good wine, particularly in Todi.
But then I also like Sorrento and Pompeii. No experience with Positano. Capri is fun but full of tourists.

Hi Den - 'Does anyone have and recs as to the best way to get from Rome to Amalfi?'

The usual options from Rome are:

1. Bus: Rome-Positano (- 4hrs 30' approx; the cheapest option - € 20)
www.marozzivt.it

2. Train: Rome-Naples (€ 25+), then limo (- € 100 approx)

3. Train: Rome-Salerno (- then ferry)

4. Train: Rome-Naples (- then hydrofoil or public transport)

If cost is not an issue, 2 is the quickest and most hassle-free.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Hi D,

We very much enjoyed a week on the AC.

I would do at least 3 nights there plus your visit to Capri.

Hi, Ira. Where did you base yourself during the week at the Amalfi coast and did you use a car?

Thanks.
