We spent time in Trapani on a prior trip, but missed the Egadi islands. We probably need another month in Sicily. |
we ALL need another month in Sicily :~)! so enjoying your posts and lovely photos, and and trying to keep the FOMO at bay as I look at and read about all the places we won't be able to fit in our our trip.
the best way for me to describe your photos is that they are full of soul, so they really convey the feel of the place in the exact moment you take the photo. sorry to hear about the gelato place in Hanover and Boston, as I would happily drive 2 hrs in either direction for excellent gelato. |

Thank you again. It is odd that such a uniquely great biz did not find an angel investor to bail her out post-Covid shutdowns. This gelato place was so good that Italian media giant RAI-TV did a profile on her business. Forbes Magazine in 2011 ran a story on her: "The Best Gelato in America?" We have tried a dozen or more other US gelato places and ALL have disappointed. |
Day 29: Salina: Santa Marina Salina, Malfa, Leni
Our first day trip from Lipari was to nearby Salina island, considered to be the “greenest” of the islands. Lots of vineyards, olive groves and large caper production. We are not scooter people, so renting a little Twizy (2 seats, one in front, one in back), with fun scissor doors, made getting around on the narrow, winding roads a breeze. Hard to believe this island of only 2500 people has so many gorgeous churches. Also, we saw ruins of dwellings from 4,000 or so years ago.
We liked the lack of crowds, once you get outside of Santa Marina Salina, the tiny port town, despite the perfect weather. In fact, there were maybe a couple dozen people in the main town, and we saw fewer than that, while driving around the island. We took a large car ferry back to Lipari, with spacious inside and outside seating, and it was almost empty. The pastoral beauty of this island was featured in the classic Italian film, Il Postino, and the community celebrates this with what looks like a souvenir from the movie. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2101a35c9.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b0bed859a.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c37aebee45.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8849c0d2b.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7adbf01f7.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b30d86012.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3b3126075.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...fc810dc57.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ea654698a.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...bef7d6355.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...19c116f7c.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4c1b3adbc.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e1184c6f5.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9959a7e8b.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c6452aa7e.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...bb6effb62.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...02e8791f8.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...07040cad1.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...be8d225a9.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5a5350d4b.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cf82efa1f.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2570bd416.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...49a47decc.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d31210992.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...391e3ad54.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ac121c9a7.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e7368a422.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9f03258da.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...97ac5ee3b.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4ca0fde05.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4acbcb362.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0c7ef9c83.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...73262fc62.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e132ae90e.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f4a2c3aa1.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...23c93983a.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5bba77769.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...321fb4e13.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...dace07a55.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...dbf8d2875.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a2417be4e.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...559180170.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...589412226.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6aabae198.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e8550ded4.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...91620b0c4c.jpg |

Day 30: Panarea
We took a relatively small, but full, tour boat for a long day (9 hours or so) to two islands. It only cost about $50 apiece. And, it wasn't as cramped as a dinghy we saw heading for a schooner.
Only a couple hundred people live on our first stop, Panarea, the smallest of the Aeolian islands. Most, including celebrities, come in the summer to this exclusive place with its mostly white villas. The celebrity roster, according to online sources, has included Giorgio Armani, Will Smith, Jeff Bezos, Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, Bradley Cooper, Oprah Winfrey, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga. A bit hard to believe. Yes, it affords some privacy and exclusivity I suppose, but there isn’t much there. A few scenic but tiny beaches. To be fair, we once lived on an "exclusive" island, and, although we were working people and not part of the blue bloods there, they did socialize a lot, and parties sometimes included entertainment that seemed out of whack with the tiny population. It still has the usual grand church overlooking Stromboli. There also are beautiful flowers everywhere, and even banana trees, complete the tropical flair. Even on a quiet May day, the local bakery was well stocked with bread and pastries. Two crisply uniformed police officers made their rounds in their “patrol cart”, as this island, like nearby Stromboli does not allow cars, no matter how famous you are. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ad9dde13f.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4ce955569.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d0c560ed0.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4e911bf9f.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...865889f50.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b8250e603.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0977e1333.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...df1d4ad1a.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...08a81c734.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...aca93aa7f.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3e2f8aad3.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b84af00f9.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...addec26bf.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...35507528a.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...042b52592.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ec0e0a386.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5261bc522a.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...47ba95df9.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...27a435255.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c141bef33.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ff92e1baf.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b94478915.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c42c91718.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...36272a071.jpeg |
Day 30: Stromboli: The Mountain & the Forest Fire
The route from Panarea to Stromboli, our next destination, included a small archipelago. These small islands and rocks are part of an ancient (as in 50,000 years ago) underwater volcanic complex.
Our boat trip included one of the “Stromboli by Night” tours, with expectations of a brilliant fireworks show from the active volcano. Instead, we found ourselves in the midst of a raging forest fire that threatened the village below. All looked normal on our initial approach, but as we rounded the corner to the harbor and village, we saw firefighters, civil emergency people, coast guard and police all gathered near the harbor; others on a roof of a house, closest to the fire. Our assumption was that a lava flow from the volcano had triggered the fires. We and they watched, while a helicopter with a small bucket unsuccessfully tried to douse some of the flames that were all over the mountainside. When that failed, they summoned a large government seaplane, which could quickly scoop up a much larger payload of water, but it also had problems keeping up. A second similar plane was brought in. The two seaplanes were operating in tandem as the sun set, and our boat was ready to watch Stromboli perform. As we left, the fire nearest the main village seemed somewhat under control, but another, a little higher up, was expanding. We learned later that a special pyrotechnics team had set a supposedly controlled fire, as part of an Italian TV production. Ironically, the show is about civil defense people putting out fires. Although special effects people looked on with the rest of the crowd, we didn't see anyone filming the reality portion. It was exciting and worrisome, as some evacuations were undertaken; and townspeople gathered to watch, as the fire got closer and closer to the village. Please bear with the attached photos that are somewhat repetitive, but it will give you a better feel of our afternoon and evening on Stromboli. After leaving the island with the hopes of seeing Stromboli explode into the night sky, we first went out by the a lighthouse perched on a dramatic rock. We were told this rock is mentioned in Greek mythology as a ship wrecker. Unfortunately, the volcano was fairly quiet, making 2 or 3 puffs of red lava, for a second or two. Most of the people on our boat missed them, as the quick pops disappeared with the blink of an eye. The arrow in our last photo shows a burst of red lava, as seen from a distance, as our boat was halfway back to Lipari. The glow from the forest fire lit up the night sky all across the islands. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...268d167c6.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d312ddd5d.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...db58c30ea.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ed1b67b38.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c218f9b2c.jpeg Stromboli https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0d9e131f4.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c807a6163.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8d8dabfd5.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1dc5f52aa.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ae0b9b4fa.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3aeee41fa.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...50ec3dc55.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8b36dac36.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...668368c10.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7dfe4c38a.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7ac96d8b6.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...380ed4670.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7c9d3cb04.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...36b6fecd0.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3b68a7f11.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5581a8619.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...26c52347c.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cb06eab70.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...81f55a82d.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d50126843.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5f2b97792.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a50ef302e.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...de02b8b0f.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...93e235822.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b8774533c.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...61fad3d37.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...71594db24.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b90db4385.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...bd95d5ed5.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9b6a8f2d4.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...19dc1d729.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...39128f783.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2065e9953.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7cedcf1d1.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9392eee55.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2facb769e.jpeg |

Day 30: Stromboli: The Village
Despite the threatening mountainside fire, some villagers went about their business. And, some tourists, like us, still took time for a couple Aperol Spritzes.
We had expected that Stromboli village was fairly small, but were surprised to find numerous restaurants, many quite large, as well as a long walking trail through a village scattered all along the lower side of the mountain. There was a laid back feeling, narrow lanes and many young people. Hikers lining up for the very long nightly walk to get a close-up look at the volcano. Lots of locals interacting with each other. Beautiful churches. Tropical vegetation, flowers, fruit trees, even a large white mulberry tree. No cars, not even for fire and police, although we saw one minivan that had markings for a local pizzeria. Not sure how they managed that. Plenty of three-wheelers, anything that can operate with a motorcycle plate. We wanted to grab something to eat but didn’t want to miss our boat. We looked at some pre-done pizza slices at a huge restaurant, but the proprietor asked if we wanted a fresh pizza. We asked how long, and he promised, with a big smile, and delivered in two minutes. Seems they are used to tourists with time limits. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...05ff28754.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...75dfba6ad.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...892c3a0d3.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d54100369.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...51c7c1098.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...11253f748.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...986a48d06.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...fa34359a4.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...364f0da5d.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b546d162e.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9cbf810f9.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...471af1d43.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0c9b6f0de.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...51a4f9c1e.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6a414508d.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...46e73a2c1.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8c3c15712.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e93b3b9d7.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...376bd5438.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...79462b8f9.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8ec9c1f92.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3fd56e822.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...045151923.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...771298015.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9187c8c7e.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1a1423da1.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...757a30ad9.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...057e4132a.jpeg |
Day 31-32: Lipari Island
We could have brought the car we rented for the month to Lipari, but decided to park it in a lot in Milazzo. To discourage cars on the four islands that allow them, non-residents can only bring them during July & August if they are staying for a week or more.
Lipari, the town, was partly pedestrianized, concentrated and busy, so we feared driving in the village itself. However, we decided to take a chance and rent a car for the day and see the rest of Lipari island. To our amazement, within a minute, we were on quiet roads with virtually zero traffic. We drove through several “beach” towns, with few people on them, even on this warm day. The beaches largely were full of rocks and seemed uninviting to us. One of them, full of white rock is below a large abandoned ancient pumice quarry. Village churches and mostly rural land comprise the remainder of the island, with spectacular views to Salina and the other Aeolian islands. Wildflowers also were in abundance. We came upon a vineyard that had an immense entry of grape leaves (and, of course, newly sprouting grapes). Never seen anything like it. It leads to a breathtaking hiking trail and the ancient quarries of Kaolin, which go back to 500BC. The quartz-like stone is a rainbow of colors, including some blues and purples. The newish owners of the vineyard itself, Tenuta di Castellaro, have invested significant euros into state-of-the-art growing systems and built a breathtaking underground facility that mimics the look of a landmark Norman cloister in the village. The afternoon tasting had no other customers, so we were treated to a private tour of the winery with our also private tasting. The circular trip around the island, without stops, can be done in less than 90 minutes, with the grand finales, being a magnificent view toward Vulcano Island and then Lipari town itself. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d79aaf1d4.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b4d6be84f.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a0adbf263.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e9ace003c.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...63eadf334.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...349e4856b.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b2c7a72c3.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7b5f78419.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7bdcce9c8.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cb03acd2f.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c6059d6f6.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a5f0527be.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2fd003e5a.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...dc2dbd9c6.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3f0e1a602.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9606a991c.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...95ea4de60.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7557b9e59.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7c018b868.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...de398aede.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...33fd2af65.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e4d327f18.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f2bbe3af6.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...48460382c.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7760f43f5.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a1976cb9a.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3303849c8.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0cb2abb28f.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...dd0b8172e.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3566d53df.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9e2568497.jpeg |

Day 33: Motta Camastra, Another Godfather Village
During our trip, we posted on a popular page about Sicily. A poster asked us if we had been to Motta Camastra. We replied we had never heard of it, despite our initial ambitions to visit as many as 90 towns and places on this trip.
And, then we noticed that we had driven by it earlier, (in fact, it is almost next door to my grandfather’s birth town). So, we decided to take a look on our way from the Aeolian islands to Taormina for our last two nights of this trip. Our Apple GPS sent us to the parking lot of Alcantara Gorge, where we had been earlier in the trip, because it is the most popular destination, I guess, in the larger town of Motta Camastra. We had to switch to google maps to get us to the right hill-top. As soon as I looked at an image of the village, I knew I had seen the sheer rock cliff that supports this hill town before. As I mentioned earlier, we re-watched all the Godfather films a few weeks before our trip. As the armed Corleone team walked below, the panoramic view of this village was said to be their namesake ancestral home of Corleone in the iconic first Godfather film. (Locations in Savoca, where we were earlier, also doubled for in-town scenes of Corleone, and they largely get the tourists). We observed, among other things, lots of rocks, including some coming out of houses. There was a war memorial that unusually also showed a woman (“Do not arm your hand, arm your soul.”) No sign of any Godfather trinkets. Otherwise, another quiet place on a Saturday with superb mountain and valley views. And several community spots to enjoy those views. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ed8f18d25.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ad4e5aec3e.jpg Corleone scene from Godfather I https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...af66493d9.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...18938e3d1.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0d6df3e38.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...10817af6d.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ce34ed2af.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cb3227dd7.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f3d8b77e4.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...faf558d42.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cbfffd045.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...18648215c.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7f29f87b6.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c1b5ecef3.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...497c11481.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...99a70e6cc.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c1001f68e.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7b7662576.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...951f107b4.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ab39d2c5b.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...98a08b404.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6794a43b0.jpeg |

Wonderful scenery, and interesting random street scenes, I’ll be sorry when your journey is over.
Adelaidean Thanks. Sicily has so much material to work with. Hoping to wrap up the report by the week-end in between trying to plan our September trip back for the family grape harvest. |
Day 33: Castiglione di Sicilia
Castiglione di Sicilia, another of Italy’s prettiest villages, not far from Taormina. A castle. Remarkable churches. We enjoyed some of the lower areas of the town along the Alcanatara River earlier in the trip. The view through the castle door is of Malvagna, my grandfather’s birthplace.

With < 2 weeks on the ground in Sicily this September, we're forced to give the Aeolian Islands a miss. Anyway, hopefully another reason to return!
