Ulm, where can we ski?

Hi, My wife is going to Ulm, Germany on business, either September or October. Does anyone know of the ski resorts within a few hours drive and what month of the year they typically open?

The ski resorts open at the end of November or beginning of December depending on the snow situation.

The closest ski resorts to Ulm are in the Allgaeu region of Bavaria, just east of the Bodensee.

You will most liklely find snow in Oberstdorf, on the Nebelhorn mountain there. It's accessible by cable car. But how much and how good the snow will be in December is always pretty "iffy". If the snow is good in the Allgaeu, then there are several other places to ski on the outskirts of Oberstdorf, near Fischen, and in the Kleiune Walsertal (reachable by bus from Oberstdorf).

You can get to Oberstdorf easily by train. Check www.bahn. de for schedules and costs. You and your wife could qualify for the Bayernkarte, which is good for one day for the both of you for under EURO 30. But it's good only after 9AM, not on fast trains (EC, IC ICE) and only second class.

A bit further away and a bit more likely with snow is the Arlberg region. For trains check St. Anton, Arlberg; or skiing on top of the Zugspitzse near Garmisch Partenkirchen, south of Munich. The Zugspitze is Germany's highest mountain and has some fair runs near the top, accessible by cog railway and then skilifts

In Sept/Oct you won't find open ski runs except on glaciers. The closest to Ulm are Ötztal (Sölden), Pitztal, Kaunertal in Austria.
