UK Hurricanes -- expect delays
 

Yesterday's hurricane in Scotland and NW England is expected to be the first of a series of North Atlantic hurricanes over the next few weeks.

Perhaps a time to think about alternate travel plans.

I realize I am being pedantic but a "hurricane" generally originates IN THE TROPICS

hurricane like winds for sure but there was some very bad damage and power is out in many locations.

It wasn't a hurricane, but there were hurricane force winds, ie 12 on the Beaufort scale.

Second storm in two days to batter my son on the Dutch coast. The windows of his house are white from the salt. High water and continuing strong winds mean several of the flood defence systems along the Dutch coast are closed today.

More storms next week, after a quieter weekend.

Schiphol was badly hit by the storms btw.

It ain't all bad. Strong tailwinds make eastbound flights fast as lightning (almost).
Yesterday, the flight from Atlanta, due to arrive in Munich at 7.40am landed at 6.10am!
Though westbound it's the opposite:
I only had a short domestic flight to Cologne, but westbound the plane didn't make more than 500kph while back to Munich we cruised at 980kph.

The Met Office have storm warnings out for the North Atlantic on Monday and into the North Sea and the Channel on Tuesday. Definitely time for making sure you're safely tucked up in bed for listening to the Shipping Forecast.

Here's hoping we don't get a surge tide down the East Coast as well...

As one of perhaps relatively few correspondents to this forum who has experienced a number of hurricanes (n=5+) I can assure you that 75 mph winds are 75 mph winds whether or not they originate in a tropical cyclone, and the unpleasantness goes up rapidly as the winds increase above 75. I would not quibble with someone who had experienced this storm and called it a hurricane.

I lived through that one and it was like being slapped with a wet cod. I have also lived through two tropic proper ones in low lying areas with no way out. A friend's 36ft yacht ended up 2 miles inland.

Cry hurricane and it's like "Shark" before anybody with any nouse who sees the fin recognises the nurse shark that will try to suck you to death.

Flooding killed 1500 in N.O. not 130 mph winds and you are right Patrick same issues in the UK with east coast flood surges although current spring tides are not high.

We had 130 mph plus yesterday in sunny Scotland and a few sheep got their fluff ruffled...(nearly forgot the Danish made wind turbine that fell apart in flames)... so please let's not start any mass hysteria about changing travel plans.
