Try eBay - they're all over the place there. I was considering taking them to Europe with me in a couple of weeks but was concerned about wearing them in the snow/rain. I didn't pay full price but still don't want them ruined!

Hi Caroline - I've found the "regular" Uggs to get water spots unless I spray them with waterproofing. The all weather Uggs I have are called "Summit" from their Adirondack collection. It's a short, ankle high boot made from waterproof leather and sheepsking with a heavy rubber sole so you don't slip on the snow & ice. They zip up the front. Not the most attractive but really, really comfortable. They look more like a hiking boot than the Uggs that everyone is wearing. Wore them in our measly inch of snow the other day and no water marks!

On the other hand... Feeling depressed after looking at the link you kindly provided, islandbeachangel, & finding that tall Uggs are $130 in the US as opposed to £170 in London !!

They are still very popular here. My oldest pair is almost 20 years old in brown. I have a black pair and this year bought direct from Australia the short SUNDANCE model that I couldn't find here in Boston where I wear mine all winter.

Just one man's opinion....Living in LA, where fortunately UGG's have been on their way out, I couldn't be happier about their declining popularity. The most appropriately named footwear ever - UGGly!! I know; they're incredibly comfortable - fine, but they are incredibly fUGGly also.

In Australia (where I think they first saw the light of day) they were regarded for many years as the absolute nadir of style, the daggy epitome of uncool, about on par with sandals worn with socks. Then, a couple of years ago, I was astonished to see both my daughters wearing them. Go figure.

Hi Neil, my daughter has a pair too! I was rather surprised! LOL. But she says that they are so warm and so comfortable.

Big confession, LoveItaly - I own a pair myself, but strictly for wearing around the house in cold weather.

It's coming back to me - in the '80s there was a young tribe in certain parts of Australia referred to as "bogans", characterised by long hair, a baggy check shirt worn outside tight jeans, and ugg boots. In Sydney they were called "westies" (i.e., from the working-class western suburbs). My kids regarded the despised bogans with undisguised contempt (indicated by gagging sounds), and more than anything the infamous ugg boot was the focus of this loathing. Fat ladies wore them to complement their tight leggings when visiting the supermarket.

My high school years were the late 1950s. I'm still waiting for a return of the fashion statements of those years: black suede shoes with ripple soles (popularly known as "brothel creepers", not that any of us had seen the inside of such a fabled establishment), fluorescent pink or green socks, pegged black slacks with a metallic fleck and a pink (or Mitchell blue) nylon shirt set off with a bobbed, horizontal-striped tie. Plus, in colder weather, a thing resembling a particularly thick horse rug called a Canadian Jacket.

Sorry for highjacking the thread with these completely irrelevant reminiscences - it happens to most of us old farts sooner or later.

Oh Neil, you always have such interesting stories.

This one in particular. I was in HS at the same time as you in a small town in the SF Bay Area.

There were two type of styles for the fellows.

One type had the ducktail haircut (do you know that style), the Levis rolled up at the bottom with a white Tshirt. Sleeves of Tshirt rolled up and at lunch or after school hours a pack of cigaretts would be in one of the rolled up sleeves. Pocketcomb in the back pocket of the Levis. Constant taking out of the comb to comb the lock of curl that fell over the forehead. And leather jackets. Oh, and they always walked rather hunched over with their hands in the back pockets of their Levis.

Other style was complete opposite. The fellows usually had real short crewcuts. And the outfit was in one color be it pink, blue, yellow etc. Always an "Easter egg color". The shirt, the pants, the thin suede belt, the socks and the suede shoes.

No ties unless it was a formal dance.

When the hippie era arrived of course a complete reverse. And the grunge look later on.

Now the "look" is the baggiest pants and tops imaginable. And long baggy shorts. Oh yes, the young fellows in our area are all wearing their atheletic shoes with the laces untied which means the laces are flopping everywhere when they walk. I am amazed that don't fall flat on their faces every few steps.

Youth does like to drive their parents crazy don't they

Can hardly wait to see what the next fashion statement will be!

Happy New Year!
