My husband and I have decided to visit the Uffizi Gallery while we are in Florence, we leave for Rome next Friday and Florence is one of our day trips.

We are interested in shopping, visiting the Ufizzi and tasting the local cuisine.

What is the best place to reserve tickets for the Gallery? I understand the wait is very long if you don't have reservations.

I can't tell you where to get advance ticket reservations for the Uffizi because we waited in line. What we found was that the line was relatively long,(we almost skipped it due to the length), but found that it went amazingly fast and the wait was quite short. Don't know if this was just that day or typical, but if you don't get advance tickets don't be discouraged. We were there the second week of September.

here is the website. You can make reservations directly. They should just give you a confirmation number and I believe they take cash only when you arrive. Very easy and certainly worth it. Book for the Accedemia as well if you want to see Michelangelo's David.

You can also ask your hotel to reserve for you, just give them a preferred time.

The easiest and cheapest way is to call Florence 011 (U.S. international access code) 39 (Italy's country code) then 055-294-883 8:30-18:30 M-F and 8:30-12:00 Sat. Florence time. You will get an English speaking operator and in 2-3 minutes YOU CAN RESERVE FOR BOTH. This is through the reservation service at the Uffizi and costs beyond the normal entry fee only about 3 euro for the service.

Carmen: The easiest and cheapest way to reserve tickets or anything is to ask your hotel to do it. I ask them to reserve things as soon as I make my hotel reservation. I have never had anyone decline and never had a problem. No matter how small the hotel or B and B they are more than happy to do it.

Since this is a daytrip for you i am assuming you will NOt be staying in a Florence hotel; therefore I would also recommend using the information ira provided and call directly.

Asking a hotel in Rome to make reservations for you in Florence may not be as easy.

Hotels anywhere in Italy will make reservations anywhere and give you a confirmation number. We have done that before, also.

The only problem with your question is that you may not get reservations this close to your trip. Try anyway, though. People have been reporting that even a month ahead of time there are no available reservations. Maybe now that summer is gone you will be lucky. We went in June and made the reservations 2 months ahead.

How long does the average fodorite spend in the Uffizi? I'm thinking close to 3 hours, but I read about someone spending only an hour. What is enough time to give it justice for someone who enjoys art, but doesn't know a heck of a lot about it?

We returned from our visit to Florence this August. I used the phone # provided by Ira to reserve tickets to the Ufizzi and Accademia. It worked great!! The operator spoke excellent English. She gave me a booking number, and I didn't have to pay until I got there. We spent about 2-3 hours at the Ufizzi, we rented the audio tour which I highly recommend. If I didn't rent the audio I would have been in and out in about an hour. I would not have understood the history.
