Are museums and other tourist attracts open on April 24, a public holiday?

Usually. And there are very few "UK" public holidays. <BR> <BR>the English have Bank holidays which, mostly, are not holidays in Scotland; and we have local holidyas which may not be holidays in the next town over. I'm too lazy to get off my backside to check whatthe 24th April is, but, at a guess, it is either Good Friday, which is a holiday in England, and most of Scotland; or Easter Monday which is not a holiday in Scotland, but is a holiday in England; or a Scottish local holiday floating in the ether. The museums will probably be open whatever the answer is. <BR> <BR>

I'm afraid that Easter Monday is a Bank Holiday in both England and Scotland, so national and city museums and city galleries will be closed. But privately owned museums and galleries will be open, and busy. <BR> <BR>Ben Haines, London <BR> <BR>

Tiny correction Ben, Easter Monday _is_ a bank Holiday in Scotland but that does not mean it is a public holiday. here in Aberdeen, for instance, it is business as usual. Public holidays in Scotland are a matter for municpailities and as such some places may be close but some will be open. In any case, IME around here, most toursit venture including the City museum stay open on holidays.

This question is for Ben, or any other person who lives in London. Since it appears that privately owned museums will be open, what about department stores? Also, does the Underground run on limited schedule or regular? Can we expect most restaurants to be open? I will be in London in late April and part of my visit will be over the Easter weekend and I was hoping some things would be open. Could you give me an idea of what might/might not be? <BR>Thanks in advance, -- p.s. I won't be in Scotland!

Sheila, <BR>Maybe next time :-) Thanks for your interesting insight into what is and what isn't a holiday in Scotland tho (seriously). It can often be frustrating to find things closed when you thought they'd be open, etc. Of course with most places of business in the U.S. these days it's surprising they even close for Christmas Day anymore.

Can't be specific about Easter Monday but usual form is for public transport to run a Sunday service on holidays. Mostly trains will run, a few stations may be closed, but intervals will be greater and first and last train times will be later/earlier. <BR> <BR>I'd expect major museums and galleries to be open over Easter albeit on a Sunday basis, I could be wrong on this. <BR> <BR>As you say, with shops nowadays its difficult to tell whether they'll be open. Traditionally DIY chains and often electronic/electrical chains open on Bank Holiday Monday. Other shops are very much pot luck.
