Tyrol - need general help

Hi All!

My spouse and I will be spending 4 days/3 nights in Tyrol in the beginning of June, coming from Salzburg via train. We will not have a car.

We are trying to find somewhere quiet to base out of that provides easy access to Innsbruck for when we leave. Our goals for this portion of our trip are to relax and enjoy the scenery. We are moderate hikers, meaning we're in our 30s, will wear good shoes, but don't hike with equipment, and prefer 1/2 day hikes over full day hikes.

I've been scouring the many, many Austrian websites for a good base, but it seems like everywhere is a good base, so I'm having issues narrowing down to one location. Oztal and Zillertal are both mentioned as good hiking areas, but we don't want to end up in a giant resort. We would love a quiet town with a small store for obtaining food and a bit of wine or beer.

We would like to spend all three nights in the same place if possible. Can anyone point me in a general direction? Was there a particular village that stole your heart? Has anyone stayed at a pension or farm that was wonderful? Any help is appreciated.

The Stubai village is perfect for hiking. Several gondolas give you access to hiking trails higher up, from just an hour to full day hikes.

Try the small town Fulpmes. It has the right size - not too small, not too big - and is linked to Innsbruck by a tram and a bus, both frequently running. There is a good selection of 3-4 star hotels but there are also enough Pensions (B&B) and rental apartments in town.

Igls is also a small town that is a few miles up in the hills from Innsbruck - scene of Olympic Ski Jump and miles of forests and trails - lovely area.

Check out Hall in Tyrol, not a village but is a small town?

We spent a long weekend at Hotel Seppl in November and really enjoyed our stay. Our visit was primarily to enjoy the Christmas markets in Innsbruck. Located a few minutes outside of Innsbruck, and with a convenient train stop almost at the doorstep to whisk one into Innsbruck in a few minutes. Our weekend package included a small suite with a balcony overlooking the mountains (for the three of us and our dog), and an “extended half-board” of breakfast and a five-course dinner each evening. Use of the 32°C indoor pool, sauna, and an “Emperor’s Grotto” was complimentary and most appreciated, as well. There are many hiking trails in the area; the hotel even offers hiking backpacks and prepared lunches for those who hit the trails.
