I found the euro symbol on Microsoft Word under Insert - Symbols. Choose "normal text" for font and "currency symbols" for subset. The euro symbol is near the bottom. Now, let's see if it will transfer to here if I copy and paste.

This hotel costs 52? per night.

Seems to work.

Darn! It looked fine until I hit the post button.

Sally,

On my iMac
shift alt 2 = ?

now that looks fine from here. Lets see what happens when I hit the post button

Pauline Jan 16th, 2002 03:30 AM

Doesn't travel well at all.

Betty Jan 16th, 2002 07:13 PM

Trying again using Alt 0128. This hotel costs 52? per night. I'd bet this doesn't come through either.

Thanks, Pauline! It's cool. (and so are Macs)

For all you PC people, there is a very good chart for key combos for accents at
http://www.wordinfo.com/how_to/accww7.htm

I found it for a friend who I'm sure couldn't cope with Alt+ numbers. For example, to type ñ (that's n with tilde, in case it doesn't come across), you hold down the Control + Shift keys, press the tilde key, release all and type n. (It is really easier than it sounds and a lot easier than all those Alt+numbers.)

I want to try a Euro. ? It worked! But I guess it won't fly.

Am I glad I use a Mac. Two Macs! Here's what you do: Go to the Apple menu. Then go to Keyboard. There you will find many, many languages to choose from. Check the ones you want to use. I keep English and Spanish on my toolbar. When I can't remember which key gives me a certain diacritical mark, I just use the Key Caps in the Apple menu.

What's with all these commands??? People, Macs rule!

I didn't see this one...

£ = press ALT, then 156 on the keypad

mr Jan 18th, 2002 10:11 AM

Erin-I just pressed 156 and Alt and got the lb sign, thanks-that is so cool~

People are already do diacritical on this board. Do we really need to teach them how to type that way?

notworkingatalleuro Jan 19th, 2002 11:29 AM

Can't make the symbol appear on mail, word, posts, etc. although i tried the alt 0128 and downloaded the symbol from Microsoft website.Any suggestions?
Thank you

An important new "discovery" has been posted on the "euro" thread.

May be useful in various situations when non-standard characters - - like € - - are needed in your post.

See http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/reference/special_characters/
Still a very useful old thread, starting with Bob Brown's post of November 23 and after that.
Another one of the accursed "irretrievable" threads, and it doesn't even fall into the "hole" period - - but it previously WAS there (August 14 - - in the Jul 22-Aug 19 hole).
