Micheline: the OP w/ the 13 year old took her trip more than a year ago.

Missreadfan topped a really old thread to ask different questions . . . .

If you take your second week near the station in Oxford you can easily make day trips in two hours by train to Warwick and Bath and by bus to Salisbury and Stonehenge, and in three by train to York.

I did that exact thing with my mom in May, except that we moved hotels midway through just for the experience of a new neighborhood (stayed in Bloomsbury the first week, South Kensington the second.) We did day trips with a BritRail Days Out of London Pass which covers most of southern England. We day tripped to Windsor, Oxford, Hatfield, Sandringham, and Salisbury. This was our 5th visit to England and in past visits we've also done day trips to Canterbury, Brighton, Battle/Hastings, Bath and Winchester. We've always done these trips on our own with the BritRail pass and Great British Heritage passes, and have only used tour companies for day trips a couple times in Scotland where train service is not quite as comprehensive as around London.
Though even if you did no day trips out of London, you could still find plenty of interest to keep you going for the whole two weeks just within London. There's that saying, he who is tired of London is tired of life - it's true! Don't forget those lovely FREE museums, as well as all the other well known sites of interest, and markets, parks, theatre, shopping, people watching - you will more likely find yourself having to prioritize your "wish list" rather than worrying about "doing" London completely in the time you're there.

OK - I'll try one more time -- all you nice people (Ben Haines, Daisy54, micheline) you are answering/helping someone who posted her questions in March, 2005

This old thread was topped by someone who is asking (I think) for suggestions for a 3-week rental in London - or maybe not . . . .
