One other question, is it pretty easy to use the France Rail Pass to get around to other towns, once we are in the Loire Valley, Riviera, or Provence. You can just go to the station and get the next train, without booking ahead, correct?

yes, as long as it is regional trains. YOu can just get on any train that doesn't require seat reservations, so all those local runs would be fine. TGVs and fast trains like that require reservations and you can't just get on them. They do run along the coast and through the Loire (from Paris to St Pierre/Tours, for example). So as long as you aren't getting on one of those, you'll be fine.
No, you would not be able to just get on a TGV train from Nice to Cannes, for example, but you would be able to get on a TER train from Nice to Cannes. I don't think there is any way to get from Cannes to Aix without using the TGV, though.

So here's the way I'm leaning. Paris 4 days, then take TGV to Nice. Stay 2-3 days take the train to other cities in the area. Take Train to Provence, 2-3 days, then train to Tours via Paris for the rest of the time. Train back to Paris to fly home. Would you recommend car rental in these areas? Or should we drive from some locations to the next stay?
