FOR Craimondo,
I happened to glance at your itinerary when I was scrolling through these. I hope it's not rude of me, but I'm a repeat visitor to Positano ( sixth time last July) and wanted to warn you that Da Adolpho is really not worth it. I can never understand why people bother with it. The food is mediocre-terrible, as is the service, the beach is a tiny stretch of sand sometimes littered with cigarette butts, and good luck getting back to town with their water shuttle. YUCK. Big tourist trap, to be honest with you.
If you want to spend some time on a much better beach, walk from the town dock toward FORNILLO BEACH ( will take you about 20-30 min) and along the way, have lunch at one of our very favorite spots on the Amalfi Coast, Lo Guaracino. It's about half-way to Fornillo Beach, up a staircase on the right hand side of the cliff. If you want a simpler lunch, you can also dine at Pupetto Cafe, right on Fornillo Beach.
Anyway, just wanted to warn you, because I've seen this place talked about over and over, and my husband and I were totally disappointed by it.
Have a great time in Positano!!

Craimmondo - I too am a repeat visitor to Positano and could not (respectfully) disagree more with WWK's characterization of Da Adolfo. We spend the greater part of one day there each trip - in fact we went twice last year and will do so again this year. I have not had a bad dish there - in fact the mussels are my friends favorite and we live in Oregon and know good seafood.
Sure the beach is small, but it is not that much smaller than Fornillo (which I also enjoy). I have also never seen trash or cigarette butts around, but then I am usually too busy eating, sleeping, or playing in the water to notice.
If you decide to go, be sure to call and get reservations.

Hi again all. I've revised our itinerary so it's a little less action packed. I just wanted to get your useful input on a couple of things, which I'll post after the trip plan below. Thanks in advance!
01-Sep Fly to Pisa, rent car. Drive to villa.
...... Time spent in Tuscany - some day trips planned.
07-Sep Return to Florence in the morning.
08-Sep Day in Florence
09-Sep Morning train to Salerno (stopping off in Rome for lunch)
...... Amalfi Coast.
13-Sep Go to Naples for long lunch. Evening flight back to UK.
The first week will be spent in Tuscany, mostly relaxing and squeezing in a day trip to Siena and Val d'Orcia. We're staying near San Gimmy, so there should be plenty of distractions if we get bored.
I need advice on Rome. We've both realised that it's just too much to do any real city tourism as part of our fortnight trip. I thought a compromise would be getting the train to Rome direct from Florence and then stopping for a few hours for a lunch and casual look around the surroundings (we don't plan on hitting the sights!). We'll then get the train to Sorrento or Salerno. Is this realistic?
I'm awaiting a guide book to plan our 4 days on the Amalfi Coast. But if anyone has a good template for this, please do point me in the right direction!
Cheers all. Tim
