Early-ish evening would be best for me; I can get the afternoon off work, but will have to get the train back that evening.
The last train leaves at 22.15 from Paddington, so in an ideal world meeting somewhere close to a Tube station on the District, Circle, Bakerloo or Hammersmith & City line would be fantastic!
Janis, lucky you!

I'll jump in - julia's work is MANY miles west of London -- she lives in the Cotswolds. That would be lovely but maybe just a bit too far for a London GTG
I think she meant she can take the afternoon off and take the train in to London to meet us and then has to catch the train home that night..
gailscout: 4:30 might be a bit too early, lots of pubs for instance won't be serving food yet. We usually meet at pubs, and make it dinner too. Someplace for afternoon tea might work - but that is likely too early for julia_t????
" how did you get the ticket? Website?"
I am on the Barbican mailing list and back when I got their e-mail about the Hamlet -- my dates were already booked up. I called to see what the plans for returns would be and while I was on the phone . . . They found a seat!!!!

gailscout - lovely idea, and thank you, but I work 100 miles out of London, in Gloucestershire, the beautiful south Cotswolds.
But if you happen to find yourself in this part of England, let me know!

"If the problem with dinner on Sep 1 is that gailscout already has other plans, "
I read it to mean she had to check w/ her friends to see if they had other plans?
"should we consider moving to Sep 2?"
That is when I have a date w/ Benedict
But maybe -- late afternoon tea and on to a pub would mean 'afternoon people' could make it and 'evening people' could make it . . .

Janis, we are staying at the University then, as we are travelling with the Pipes and Drums of Canada for some of our trip. We will be taking a driving tour, likely to St. Andrew's that day, but will be back in plenty of time. It takes us about 20 mins to walk to the Royal Mile.

Checked with my friends and we have no plans for dinner so I'm free. They want to go to Chiswick House during the day so later does work better for me on Sept 1. Janis, I figured out the Barbican site but my date has not shown up yet - checking feverishly

gailscout: Yay -- now it looks like we can do a proper pub GTG
jane1144: OK -- let's wait a couple of days to see if unclegus checks back in (or anyone else in Edinburgh at the time) and then we can pick a place -- maybe on the Royal Mile or in Grassmarket?

Morgana: Didn't see your post. I never mentioned my quick stop in York because it is the Bank Holiday Saturday and assumed it would be a stretch -- this is really just a lightening visit to make up for what I missed out last year.
Was going to be in Edinburgh for the Tattoo and Glasgow for a friend's retirement party and decided to squeeze in 1.5 days in York on the way down to London. Had a devil of a time finding a place that either had availability or would book for just Saturday night. I was amazed how many had a two night weekend minimum -- and not just because of the holiday. Their regular policies.

Hi , it is going to be pretty busy in Edinburgh but grassmarket is as good a place as any.The Last Drop pub might be good for a meet up, decent enough food and good beer

places seldom take bookings at that time of year but if the group is 6 or less it should not be a problem.Loads of other places nearby too.

Hi unclegus, "Loads of other places nearby too." That's what I was thinking too. We'll be a small group so we could start at the Last Drop and if it was slammed we could try another place since there are so many.
jane1144: Do you know what time you are getting back from St Andrews?

6 should be fine,i would struggle to get there for 5 as I live and work on the south side of the city, but 6 would be no problem.
Jane what part of the University are you staying at Pollock Halls? if so a No2 bus goes from outside there right into the Grassmarket and that will most likely be the bus I will use.
