Two types of trains between Rome and Assisi

Fodorites should be aware that there are two types of trains between Rome and Assisi: Interregionale/Regionale, and Eurostar Italia. Some services require a train change in Foligno. Others are direct. What is the difference between train types?

Eurostar Italia (ES)

1. Costs nearly 6 Euros more (14.87 versus 8.99 for the Interregionale/Regionale, in second class)
2. Travel time 1 hr. 45 mins. versus 2 hrs. 10 mins.
3. All seats sold on a reserved basis
4. Fully air conditioned
5. Quieter and smoother
6. Has beverage/snack service on rolling cart

Interregionale (IR)/Regionale (R)

1. Cheaper than Eurostar
2. Takes longer, though not by much
3. No seat reservations taken
4. Usually no air conditioning
5. No beverage/snack service
6. Not quite as smooth and quiet
7. Railcars not as modern
8. Some trains equipped to take bicycles

Recommendations: Take the train that best fits your schedule. Try to take a direct train. There are more scheduling possibilities on the IR/R than on the ES. If travelling on a very hot day, try to take the ES. If coming in directly from Fiumicino Airport, you have the choice of connecting either at Rome Termini or at Rome Tiburtina, as all Assisi-bound trains now stop at Tiburtina (Tiburtina is an easier connection from the airport). For such a short trip, the additional cost for first class is difficult to justify, although the difference is small.

Note: All Assisi-bound trains stop at Spoleto and Foligno. All proceed to Perugia.
In Spoleto, there are bus connections to Norcia and Cascia. In Foligno, there are bus connections to Spello, Bevagna and Montefalco.

GAC, thanks so much for this type info. You provide a great service on this forum with your expert transportation advice.

Here are the two absolute FASTEST services from Rome to Assisi:

Lv. Rome Termini 13:46 ES train
Ar. Assisi Station 15:33

Lv. Assisi Station 15:46 city bus
Ar. Assisi P.zza Unita' d'Italia 15:52

AND

Lv. Rome Termini 19:44 ES train
Ar. Assisi Station 21:33

Lv. Assisi Station 21.45
Ar. Assisi P.zza Unita' d'Italia 21:51

As you see, you can get to Assisi is as little as two hours, 6 minutes via the direct ES train with no change in Foligno. The train continues on to Perugia.

One way fare is 14.87 Euros for a reserved second class seat on the ES train, plus 80 cents for the city bus.

The distance between Assisi and its train station (3 miles, uphill) is too far to walk.

It takes a lot of work to compile and publish this sort of information; I just wish more people would read it before posting.

I notice these postings and I think that they're great. But how can people find them?

Perhaps there should be some sort of "Superthread" for all the GAC postings?

Wouldn't that make life much easier?

Just click on his name and you will get all of them in order of post date.

I know that trick. I guess (s)he doesn't post often enough to invalidate this trick.

Still it's nice to have all of the posts collected in a format that's easily accessible, I think.

That's still one of my main gripes about this forum.
