Two-Star Favorites
 

Hi. Inspired by another thread re budget travel (which is more difficult than it was in the 70's surprise, surprise), I thought perhaps we could share the names and locations of favorite two-star accommodations.

Anyone who reads the Swiss threads probably knows that I'll need to start off with my favorite, The Albergo Panorama in Gerra Gambarogno at the Swiss end of Lago Maggiore. To really appreciate it, you must be a fan of quiet villages, but if you are, you might like to give it a try. Good food, comfortable rooms, wonderful views.

Don't have any but I do NOT want to stay in that 2* where that woman on the other thread scorched the carpet with her travel iron and then got mad because they wanted her to pay for the repairs!

I had been reluctant to take 2**s, not knowing what the level of service or condition of accommodations would be. Hotel Rondinella in Locarno, though has made me change my mind. This hotel is spotlessly clean, has a gracious on-site owner, offers a great view of the lake and city, is convenient to shopping and train station and has ice, modern rooms. Oh, and cost was 140chf/nt for a double with breakfast this past May. I'd definitely go back.

I was very happy with my stay in January 2003 at the Albergo Pestalozzi in Lugano, Switzerland. Great location, friendly and helpful staff, spotlessly clean rooms, comfortable beds. I had a perfect view of the lake from my room.
When I went back in June 2003, all of the above was still true...BUT it was the brutal heat wave and AP is not air conditioned. The ceiling fans helped very little. I'd give this little hotel a strong recommendation...unless there's a major heat wave.

How about France? I loved the little town of Dambach-la-Ville in Alsace, and was pleased with the two-star "Au Raisin d'Or". What a charming alternative to the more famous wine villages. (Good rail connections, too.) J.
