Ditto Landsknecht......plastic flowers and all.
We couldn't believe how unhelpful the staff was......
My husband is a winewriter....at lunch we tried a couple of the proprietor's wines. We liked them & asked if we could make an appointment to meet with the winemaker.
No...............

We came to the same conclusion that you did.....not again....and no recommendation.

Jayne, I think you weren't yet asking for suggestions for the Romantic Road area, but I'll jump in anyway with a couple of suggestions:

Be sure to visit the Bishop's Residenz and Chapel in Wurzburg! They are amazing, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in the world, designed by Balthasar Neuman (sp?). While the palace is over-the-top baroque, it's also elegant and not so over the top as a place likie Schloss Linderhoff.

Here's a link to the chapel:

And a virtual tour of the palace:

In Rothenberg, I was so put off by the mobs of tourists, but most of all the tour busses, that I did not enjoy that town as much as I might have. HOWEVER, do not miss St. Jacob's church, which contains two fabulous carved altars by master carver Tilman Reimanschneider, as well as a marvelous carved and painted wooden altar by other master carvers and artists. It is so different from the Chapel at Wurzburg, it would make you laugh, because where the chapel is ornate baroque, with gold and white and elaborate marble, St. Jacob's is dark and wooden and brown. Both esquisite, but completely different.

Thanks, Mary Fran. The virtual tour is great. I had planned to stop at the Residenz but had no idea what to expect. Pretty amazing! I think we'll get to Rothenburg late in the day and I understand the crowds thin out by evening. We are only spending one night there.

We're spending two nights at Hotel am Markt in St. Goar starting this Saturday. We're planning to see the Rheinfels ruins and the next day we will take a cruise on the Rhine. We're taking bikes with us to ride back so we can hop off and see some of the castles and picnic. The second night we're going to go to Bacharach and see the town. I've heard of a falconry show so I might try to catch that as well.

Sounds great, Dohlice. If you get back before September 29, I'd love to hear a report, including weather! Have fun!

Mary Fran--thanks. Your photos brought back some wonderful memories of the Mosel, Beilstein, and Hotel Haus Lipmann.
