Two night stay between Paris and Lyon

My wife and I are planning a trip to France in May. We arrive in Paris on a Sunday morning but do not join our barge tour group until Tuesday evening. Since we are spending a week in Paris on our own after the tour, spending those first few days in Paris is not an option. Any suggestions for a two night stop between Paris and Lyon? We will most likely travel by rail.

Dijon, a beautiful and interesting city, would be right on your way--it's on the TGV line.

If your barge trip will begin in Lyon, why not spend the two nights in Lyon? Plenty to see and do there and it is just beautiful all over.

We were in Lyon for only one day, and would have loved another day or two. The Lyon website is a magnificent resource. Be sure to check out the Traboules and Murals - exploring the city while vising them is a fabulous experience. The park, with its lake, is amazing.

If you do spend the extra time in Lyon, I highly recommend the Segway Tour and the L'Opentour hop on/hop off bus. Both are excellent ways to enjoy the glorious scenery all about.

If you're planning to travel by train, be sure to find MorganB's "guide" here on this forum. Invaluable!

Thanks for the suggestions. Since we are going to Dijon during the barge tour, will probably opt for Lyon directly.

If you had the chance to rent a car and you want to experience some remarkable dining, I would recommend going to Georges Blanc's hotel/ restaurant in Vonnas, which is to the northeast of Lyon. He has his main restaurant and then a smaller one, where he prepares meals that his grandmother made. His grandmother's chicken dish was absolutely unforgettable. Don't think that you could do it by train unless you got a cab/rented a car from some suitable train station along the way.

We spent 4 fabulous weeks in that region this past Sept. Our four favorite cities were:

Dijon
Beaune
Troyes
Auxerre

Auxerre or Chablis fit in physically about right. Chablis is pretty small but worth a day including a wine visit.

Auxerre the views are great and food just right

We love Dijon. We stay in a charming appartment. www.myhomeindijon.com There is a lot to see. The owner of the apartment can meet you at the train station. This is very nice when one is tired from an overnight flight. The town is very friendly to pedestrians.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The barge tour we are taking is "Best of Burgundy by Overseas Adventure Travel. We have done two trips with them(Egypt and China) and loved both of them. Jcall
