Two Books of Possible Interest to Visitors to Ireland

During our recent trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland we came across two books which we found to be quite interesting. They are both published by Appletree Press and are called Irish Place Names and Irish Family Names respectively. Each is a compact 4 1/2 by 6 inches in size.

The place names book details the derivation and meaning of "...over 2,000 well-known names..." The family name book describes eighty family names in detail. I found the family names book on our visit to Mount Stewart and it cost 5.99 GBP. It took some searching but I finally found the place names book at the Kilkenny Bookshop at a cost of 6.95 euro. Both were well worth the money to me.

The great value from these books was that their small size allowed me to carry one or the other with me on day trips. When my wife took house tours or shopping detours I was able to haul a book out and educate myself in small doses (mustn't strain the brain at my age) during my waits.
