I'm banning spelling corrections! Everyone cease and desist and just enjoy the flavor of the TR! It sounded like a wonderful time and I'm so glad you will return.

Great trip report. It made me miss Paris. I go in September, but I wish I was going sooner. Thank you for sharing.

Hi grommet - ignore my comment on your other post..I found you here. Thank you for this update. You have done basically what we plan to do and I am very pleased to see your thought process about the shuttle/RER decision.

We are leaving for Paris this Sunday and your wonderful trip report was just what i needed for inspiration!

lilaki Apr 29th, 2009 05:15 AM

hi grommet,

i enjoyed your report!

i'm planning to do a similar CDG-to-the-6th trip when we get to paris in october. can you tell me how much your cab ride was??

tks!

AnnMarie_C Apr 29th, 2009 05:37 AM

Wonderful report!

grommet19 Apr 29th, 2009 05:40 AM

Hi lilaki,

On the way in from the airport, our taxi from Gare to Nord to our hotel was about 12 or 13e, and I gave him 1 or 2e for a tip (probably generous but I wasn't sure of the protocol). Our whole trip using RER and taxi was about 30e.

We paid 34e plus a 2e tip for the shuttle back to CDG.

lilaki Apr 29th, 2009 05:57 AM

hi grommet,

thanks for letting me know.

may i ask why you didn't take the RER to st. michel and then take a cab from there??

traveltheel Apr 29th, 2009 06:15 AM

Really enjoyed this report- you brought Paris to life. Thanks.

grommet19 Apr 29th, 2009 06:19 AM

Well, we also considered taking the RER and then switching to metro, and walking to our hotel from there (we were close to the Vavin station). But that just seemed to daunting, knowing that we would be tired and have luggage. I figured there might not be an escalator at Vavin.

Someone suggested that we take the RER to Gare du Nord, then take a taxi from there to the hotel. Easier than dealing with the metro but cheaper than taking a taxi all the way from CDG. And at 30e, it was definitely cheaper than a taxi would've been. It was pretty easy to do - we got to Gare du Nord, went outside to the taxi stand across the street and caught a taxi. The most inconvenient part was buying RER tix at CDG - the line took forever.

But as I said before, a shuttle would have been much easier and just a few euros more.

This is a great and very practical report! Thanks for taking the time to write it.

I will always confirm that relaxing in Paris is much more enjoyable than running around like a maniac.

PatrickLondon Apr 30th, 2009 04:52 AM

Absolutely. The best thing about any holiday is the chance to do ...absolutely nothing.

nukesafe Apr 30th, 2009 11:03 AM

The old Spanish proverb applies here: "How superb it is to do nothing --- and to rest afterward."

:-)

grommet19 Apr 30th, 2009 11:23 AM

Ha ha. We've been home for a week and I'm still recovering. And we took it easy! I can't imagine how I'd feel if we had tried to "do everything" in Paris.

bleuzebu Apr 30th, 2009 05:00 PM

Merci! What a wonderful report, so very inspiring. I'm visiting for the first time in late May with my fiance, (we are 30 "something's" too). At this age I no longer feel the need to be out at the hottest club every night, it's good to slowly savour the beauty of Paris like a fine wine non? I hope we will have such a lovely time as you.

grommet19 May 1st, 2009 04:57 AM

Absolument! Just sit back and enjoy the ride. You'll have an amazing time -- it's impossible not to!

PatrickLondon May 2nd, 2009 10:41 AM

Another thought: this way you realise how much more there might be to see and do on future visits....

grommet19 May 2nd, 2009 11:42 AM

I was at a dinner last night and talked to the guy next to me about the trip he took to Paris a few years ago with his sister. They were in France for a total of 6 days and visited Normandy AND Versailles. He doesn't even remember anything about Paris. I felt so sorry for him!

Completely random question that my husband wants me to ask: Why are there no squirrels in the parks in Paris? We spent a lot of time in parks and never saw a single one.
