simenon: i suggest you google a map of Avignon. Its tourist site has one, I know.

Actually, it's not a large town. The central RR station is sort of at the south end of the city center, which is maybe only 6 blocks long if that. If you've time, there's a tour ....well, bus would be an overstatement....open coach pulled by a motorized tractor-like thing... of the central city. Sort of a hop-on, hop-off thing. We found the town less than we expected.

TGVs however mainly serve the new out of town Avignon-TGV station with shuttle buses from there to the town center.

the intown Avignon station has mainly non-TGV trains from say Lyon, Arles, Nimes, etc.

Tomboy, you should know that Avignon "extra muros" is about six times larger than the walled part, but tourists only go to the walled part, same as for Carcassonne. People absolutely could not live in such a museum piece if there were not hypermarkets and shopping malls in the rest of the city.
