Tuscany/Umbria Oct. 22-Nov. 5 or Nov. 3-17?

Tuscany/Umbria Oct. 22-Nov. 5 or Nov. 3-17?
My wife and I are planning a two-week trip and wondering which makes more sense in terms of weather (temperature and rain), crowds, the fall harvest and hotel/restaurant availability -- I gather November might be less crowded, but some places might also be closed. Your thoughts?

Hello eagleplume, I would go during the Oct. 22-Nov. 5th period as November tends to be usually quite a rainy season in Tuscany. The weather patterns are not predicatable but going as early as possible would be the best in my opinion.

Thanks so much, LoveItaly. I thought that might be the case but I'm also a Philadelphia resident and fan of the Phillies, who, as of tonight, will be in the baseball playoffs and the World Series could run till Nov. 5.
Regardless, I gather the arc of the food harvest wouldn't be appreciably different, with the olive harvest going on and truffles starting to become available. Is that correct?

LoveItaly, can you supply any more insights about Autumn weather in Tuscany and/or Umbria?
We just booked to fly into Milan on Oct. 16 and out of Rome on Nov. 1. We will likely spend week 2 in Montepulciano, followed by a couple of days in Rome.
Week 1 was supposed to be Lombardy + maybe Liguria -- but we're starting to think we should be moving south to avoid bad weather. Hence my interest in Umbria. Or is even that "iffy"?
Maybe we should just head to cities (Florence, Bologna???) where weather matters less....
I hope we are not leaving this trip to late in the season -- we normally go to southern France in this period and have always had superlative weather in Provence and around Toulouse.

It is all a question of luck, and which year you happen to be there. We spent Nov. 5-14 of 2008 in Tuscany, spending several days each, in this order, in Cortona, Montepulciano, just outside Lucca. With the exception of the last day and a half where we had between light rain and torrential downpours, we had gorgeous, cool, sunny and clear-sky days.
