You don't not need to hire a tour guide unless you want to spend the money. I contacted many wineries, big, small and family owned, and several e-mailed me back with a great welcome and said that the tour/tasting was free. You MUST have a car in Tuscany and I would highly suggest a GPS--it was wonderful!

Villa Caffaggio in Panzano was incredible, friendly, and beautiful AND FREE. Also in Panzano is a small, family winery, La Fonti...nice, quaint, beautiful view, free. Also, in San Gimignano http://www.casaallevacche.it/it_azienda.html (this vineyard and area produces the vernacchia wine) and FREE. In Poggiobonsi (not the newer city, on the hill) Fattoria Ormanni--beautiful place (one of the Medici properties), very nice people, FREE.

I planned each day which areas we would visit and planned the wineries based on those areas. Panzano is close but hilly and winding. Greve is right next to there. I didn't plan Greve tours since it would be a little further out of the way from our location. Poggiobonsi, Barberino Val d'Elsa, San Gim. all very, very close together, as well as Certaldo.
Hope this helps!

this is an old post but I had to check out this guy Alessandro. I was in Florence last week with my dh and two girls - and dh went back to the apartment after diner while the girls and I went to get Gelato. I met the most charming two men - and the girls thought it was a riot (they insist they were flirting with me) turns out this man - Alessandro states he is a tour guide of the Tuscany region and through chatting he says he is mentioned the Frodors boards.. I am slightly sceptial but low and behold here he is.

I see here that it says he lives in another area but he was in Florence that night...

oh and btw, he did give me his email and it is:
[email protected]

I hope that is right - the writing is a little hard to read.

Next June we will be going from Florence to Cinque Terre thru Tuscany with one night stay somewhere. Can anyone recommend a wonderful place to stay one night where we could also visit some of these wineries you are all recommending. Are there any small tour groups that include a night stay in Tuscany?

Does one need to book a wine tour in advance or it can be done right there in Florence? What approach would you recommend?

We recently did a group wine tour with Rebecca from Tuscan Wine Tours and highly recommend it! http://www.tuscan-wine-tours.com/

We were looking for a small tour but also not terribly expensive. This was a great solution, although Rebecca also does private tours. On our tour there were 4 of us in total and we visited 2 wineries which included olive oil tasting and a homemade lunch. Wonderful! Enjoy your trip!

I mentioned this already in another post but we really enjoyed our tour with Todd Bolton. It included a delicious italian meal, a tour of 3-4 vineyards and was the most reasonable my husband and i had found. It was from 10-4 and it was worth every penny.

Last year my wife and I took a <a href="http://www.cellartours.com/italy/win...ot;>chianti wine tour</a> with CellarTours, a private company that specializes in private tours to wineries in Chianti. I must say we had a truely wonderful time. We visited Badia a Coltibuono and Capannelle wineries, which are both excellent producers and I personally love their wines. Afterwards we went to a wonderful charming local restaurant and had a five course lunch which I can only describe as "heaven on a plate". Our driver and guide were both fantastic and spoke perfect english, I just wish we had longer.
