Tuscany vs. Positano

I will be spending time in Vienna and from there want to spend 4-5 days in Italy. My question is should I fly to Florence and take the train to Siena (home base) and explore Tuscany for a few days, or go to Positano and check out the Amalfi coast. I am so torn I was wondering what other people would do!

What time of year are you going?

Why would you spend all that precious time and money doing what other people would do?

Truthfully I would do neither.

It really depends on what time of year you are going, whether or not you will want to rent a car and your interests.

Personally, I adore the Amalfi Coast and visit every chance I get. But if you are interested in renting a car, driving through the countryside and visiting hilltowns, then Tuscany would be a better place for you.

I am going in May. Probably will not rent a car if we go to Tuscany, we would hire a driver. We will want to go to Chianti and check out some of the wineries! I am leaning towards Tuscany because I have read of some of the hill towns that sound just magical. We have visited some in France, and they were some of my favorite places in the world.

I don't believe that it's a simple question. The charms of both places appeal to me and it's not a "which one" question. What one person likes isn't what another may like.

In May both places will be much easier to get round, although Tuscany really does need a car IMO. The AC is more easily done using the SITA bus.
