Tuscany touring "Base"
 

Our family is hoping to visit Tuscany this August and plan to spend 5 nights in the region. We'd obviously spend a day in Florence, another day exploring a couple of hill towns and possibly spend a day seeing part of the Cinque Terre district.

Ideally, we'd like to stay in a less touristy town that would give relatively easy access to the above destinations. We would also like to stay in an "agriturismo".

Looking at a map, I was thinking of a place near Volterra or San Gimingnano.
We would have a car for the duration of our visit.

Any recommendations for a town or an agriturismo are greatly appreciated.

Most agriturismi are not in towns, and it is better to visit Florence by public transportation. You will find both San Gimignano and Volterra packed with tourists in August, and basing near there would make for a very long drive to Florence and le Cinque Terre.

There are agriturismi in the hills of Pisa that might suit you. Try looking around San Miniato or Pontedera.

You are hoping to marry what is really 3 destinations, and it will not work.
Decide what you really want to see---rural Tuscany hill towns, Florence, or the CT---and rural agriturismo or a small village---you cannot do it all from one destination.

I haven't found that to be the case, at least for late August, but wouldn't choose either as a base.

What is the reason you want an agriturismo? Amenities? Views? Pool?

There are lots of places with easy driving in and out, with some just being apartments, not really agriturismos.

If you just want an apartment and pool with close proximity to Florence/San G and easy road access, you might try somewhere like Le Torri.
