Wonderful info Stu. I'm printing it out to take in June.

The Val d'Orcia is truly amazing. Yes, to StuDudley, I've read Iris Origo's The War In The Val d'Orcia, and loved it. Her daughters run La Foce, and even if travelers are NOT staying in one of their house, a visit to the fabulous gardens is a must, if you happen to be around on the one day a week it is open to the public. It used to be Wednesday afternoon, but you can google "LaFoce" and probably find out. I envy anyone going there.Another great restaurant is worth the trouble to find - It's La Rosa del Trinoro, in a high hamlet called Castiglioncello del Trinoro, can be found on a local map, it is south of La Foce Villa down a dirt road and up a steep hill. Magical views.

Marking because this drive sounds so dreamy. Thanks for posting.
Steve James has posted beautiful driving itineraries for the Dolomites too. I would love to do both itineraries! |
Packed: Oh, no! I'm hearbroken about La Rosa del Trinoro closing. I've been dreaming about going back there. But thanks for the heads up.

Two weeks ago, I covered most of Stu's driving itinerary - highly recommended - Stu, you are my hero!
Check out day 2 and 3 of my agenda for photos of Stu’s itinerary. http://fodors.com/forums/threadselec...p;tid=35000199 Regards .. Ger |

Thanks for this great info. Saving to print later.

If anyone would like a small detour after leaving Pienza turn right at the famous farmhouse of calenders. Drive for about 2 miles and you reach the church of Santa Anna in Camprena (set of the English Patient. It hasn't changed much since they filmed and is eerie.

What a fantastic post! Do you know if any of the farms that serve dinner to guests are along this drive? They are usually supported by Slow Food.
Thanks. |
