TUSCANY ROAD TRIP
 

In September we plan a months road trip through Italy .. driving from Venice .. then through Tuscany and Umbria. Does anyone have recommendations for mid range hotels that would be central enough that we could spend a week in each yet be within 45 minutes to an hour from the major sites around .... then move to another week’s hotel and another area? Suggestions for hotels and itineraries (ideas or things not to be missed) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks SO much for any help you can give! My direct email is: [email protected]

I'm topping this for you since you didn't get much help.

Try adding your budget, and some of the towns/areas you're interested in visiting.

Look at a guidebook or in the "destinations" section of this website for ideas to get you started.

Check out www.tuscany.net for accomodations in Tuscany. Plug in your budget, area, and other specifications (pool, etc.) and you will get some ideas.

Usually more specific questions will get you better advice.

My neice stayed in the San Martino one.

This was very cheap. They were charged less than the posted fees on the site.

It is less than an hour to Florence and 20 minutes or so to Sienna and much more all around. I think an ideal location to do Tuscany

When we were in Umbria, we stayed at this place: www.relaisilcanalicchio.it
It is located in the country but close to a highway, and with easy access to Assisi, Perugia, Deruta, Spello, Todi, Montefalcone, and Bevagna. Gubbio is slightly farther. And we took a day trip to Orvieto while there.

In Tuscany, there's so much to see that I think you have to pick a part and concentrate on it. We've spent time in southern Tuscany: Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, Pitigliano, San Quirico d'Orcia, Bagni Vignoni. Then there's Chianti, Siena-San Gimignano-Volterra, Lucca, Pisa, the hills in northern Tuscany, and so on.

Use one of the mapping programs, like www.mappy.com or www.maporama.com to see how long it takes to drive from one place to another.

Since you're staying a week in one place, have you considered renting an apartment or villa? Slowtravel is the site for information about villa renting. And, in fact, all aspects of travel in Italy.
