Tuscany Itinerary
We have 6 full days in Tuscany beginning on the 11th of June. We arrive late Saturday after driving from Salerno. Would love to hear thoughts/suggestions on our "proposed" itinerary:
Sunday-rest day Monday - Siena Tuesday - Chianti Wednesday-Volterra, San Gimignano Thursday-Montalcino, Pienza, Montelpulciano Friday-open day We like to sample wine/food, stroll around towns and enjoy the architecture. Not big on museums and churches. Not sure if more than one town/day is too much??-Thanks |
I think your schedule looks ok, but it depends on where you are staying.
|
Makes sense, if you did like museums you need to know that many are closed on Mondays
|
Your itinerary sounds good to me. I think it is always good to stay flexible in case you find yourself enjoying a particular spot and wish to linger longer. Your open day will easily allow for that.
Have a great trip! |
Thanks everyone. We are staying in Bucine so I think most drives should be reasonable (says the passenger);)

I prefer driving secondary roads in Tuscany rather than taking the fastest route using primary roads or the autostrada. It's a more interesting way of seeing the area IMO. So for me Volterra would be too far from Bucine if you also want to see SanG in the same day. It's two hours to Volterra on secondary roads, not counting any stops or delays, although you would drive through part of Chianti.
(You can search secondary routes on Google Maps by clicking on "options" and checking the boxes to avoid highways and tolls.) I likely wouldn't be able to explore Montalcino and Pienza and Montepulciano in the same day from Bucine. The driving time, finding parking, walking in/out, wandering the streets, having a nice lunch somewhere, all use up the day rather quickly. There are also interesting stops or detours in the area and along the way. For example, San Quirico, two abbeys, a couple of ancient spa towns... I agree with KTtravel, stay flexible. |
Enjoy!

We are definitely back road drivers too so I appreciate the comments. Also thinking of renting a motorcycle for a day of touring so we will definitely be staying flexible.
