In addition to those great day trips from Bologna, don't forget to spend some time in the city itself. Santuario di Madonna di San Luca, Santo Stefano and San Petronio are among the sites worth a visit.
The Bologna Tourist office is in Piazza Maggiore. They have a website with a good deal of tourist information on tours and activities (e.g., cooking classes):

We took the Old Town Guided Tour they offered(7 euros), but there are others, including one of the Medieval Market. I thought the tour gave a very good overview of the city and enjoyed the information on San Petronio, a fascinating church. The highlight of the tour for me was the Compianto sul Cristo Morto by Niccolò dell’Arca in Santa Maria della Vita. These terracotta sculptures are wonderfully expressive and unique for their time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niccol%C3%B2_dell%27Arca).

mamma mia, So gladi you listed a tour in bologna. Janetd 7 I'm definitely planning to detail the trip when I get home. I'm pretty sure we will drop the car off at the Bologna airport and shuttle into town. After that, it's all trains! Thanks again everyone.
