Tuscany Experts: How is drive from Assisi to Montapulciano
Viamichelin says the drive from Assisi to Montapulciano is just over an hour. Does that sound about right -- considering the curvy roads?
(Thinking of using the agrotourism "Malvarino" which is just outside Assisi as a home base and driving for a day to Montapulciano/Pienza.)

Deanna, it's Malvarina. Don't miss it! Make sure you have dinner there at least one night of your stay.
I've driven from a tiny town east of Sienna to Assisi, mostly on a four-lane highway, and it seemed to take somewhat more than an hour. Sorry I can't be more helpful with that part of your question.

Hi, Betsy. Right, Malvarina. Your description of the drive being "Somewhat more than an hour" seems to be in sinc with viaMichelin.com -- it says 1 hr 26 min...so I guess I can trust it.
You said it's highway. Is it pretty straight, or lots of curves?
I've seen your posts on Malvarina...you seem to think it's worth it...

We were based in Pienza this past spring and drove to Assissi for the day. I would say Michelin has it right. Just over an hour . There was heavy traffic around Perugia but never any great slowdowns. Nice drive really!

We stayed at Malvarina a while back. Realize that getting to the farm from the highway takes a good 15 minutes - it's a very windy, narrow road to the farm, we saw lots of car paint scrapes on one especially sharp curve! Malvarina is a beautiful, relaxing, spot about 1/2 hour from Assisi. Don't miss one of the incredible dinners there - it was the best (and most memorable) meal of our trip. However, Montepulciano is a very beautiful hilltown with lots to explore - you may want to consider a night there. Another extremely scenic drive is from Assisi to Gubbio.

Hi again!
Montepuliciano was our favorite hill town. Be sure to visit Contucci Winery and go in the side door if possible (to the right of the main entrance). This is where we met the owner and had some great wine! YOu'll be pretty close to Pienza also from there. I am so excited for you. I just love Tuscany.
