Tuscany-Can I get an overview of the region?

I'm a little overwhelmed in my research of the region, and I'm hoping some of you who know the region well could help me out. I've heard some names over and over, i.e. Lucca, Siena. I know Tuscany is a large region with lots to see. With repects to Florence, Rome, and Pisa, is there a particular "small town" (Siena, Lucca?) that is equidistance to the three cities? Ideally I'd like to stay in one central location while perhaps day tripping to the cities, however they could be farther apart than I think. I'm sure I might want more than just one day in Rome. Perhaps flying into there and working my way North on train would make more sense? Sooooo many decisions!
Thanks for your help in advance...

regretably, florence is the most central of all the medium to big towns in tuscany and is really the hub for transport to all the rest.

If you are there for only a week, it would make most sense to stay there. If you have longer, then you could base yourself in lucca for the north, perhaps siena for the south.

As for rome, you are right - one night would just be frustrating! I'd rather not go at all, but if you have the time, at least 3 nights would give you time to see the main sights.

Have a look at Rick Steves' book for ideas of what to do in 1,3, and 7 days.

an open jaw flight [into florence, out of Rome] would mean that you didn't waste time restracing your steps.

Main question is - how long do you have for the trip?

Thanks for your help! Well it's not an actual planned trip yet, meaning I'm doing a little research for it now, and can hopefully "make it happen" within the next year. I've just started my career and have to rack up my vacation days first :-\ But at least it will give me time to save up money! At most, I'll have about 15 days to work with, but keeping in mind no matter how crazy it seems, I absolutely MUST get to Paris for even two days. I can't fly all that way and not see le tour Eiffel!

I just got a genious idea to look at *gasp!* a map. What about San Gimignano, that looks pretty central, what is that area like?

Without a car, stay in Siena or Florence as a hub--no other place works.
